Chapter 1:

Prologue: The Four Tendencies

The Odd Lamp

Mirth

There is a part of the mind that lightens the air without anyone noticing quite how it does. A small shift in tone, a moment that passes more easily than it might have otherwise. Mirth lives in those small adjustments. It does not change the truth of things, only the weight with which they arrive. For a time, that can be enough.

Curiosity

Another part cannot sit still in the presence of a closed door. It notices the strange sound in the next room, the detail that does not quite belong. It asks questions long after the answers have stopped being comfortable. Curiosity lingers where others move on. Left alone long enough, it will find truth.

Comfort

There is also the instinct to quiet the search, to soften the moment and guide the mind somewhere gentler. Comfort settles over things in a calm, familiar way. It suggests that not every question needs an answer, and that the truth can wait a little bit longer. Sometimes that is kindness. Sometimes it is simply delay.

Truth

And then there is the thing that waits beyond all of it. It does not laugh. It does not wonder. It does not soothe. It remains exactly where it has always been, patient and still, while the others take their turns. And when they are finished, it is still there… until the moment comes when it can no longer be ignored.
