Chapter 12:

Future

Little green apocalypse

Is It inevitable?

Since the dawn of time, our species has been in constant evolution.

But to me, it feels more like a race against time.

What is the purpose of each living organism?

What is ‘Living’?

Why did I come to life, me?

And what would it have been like, if I had been born in another era?

Do people ask themselves this kind of question? I ask myself them constantly.

I’m looking for a meaning of my life. I’m trying to find out why I’m living.

But no matter how much I think about it, the question seems futile to me.

I don’t think there’s any real answer to this.

Organisms evolve to live and survive.

Life is a pass that we’re given for a while.

Maybe we’re just the guinea pigs of a machination that’s above us.

But why complain about things that we can’t understand.

I’m not going to ask Earth to stop spinning, because I like the night.

I’ll make do with it, and I’ll play with it.

I was granted the right to be alive at that time. What do I want to become?

… We must cherish life.

What makes life precious is that it has an end.

Perhaps without this, wars would have covered the face of the Earth for centuries.

What will be the final stage of human evolution, then?

A being, who has abstained from his physical body, or the opposite?

What will lead this sequel? Our emotions, or our desire to go further?

… It’s a little too complicated for me.

I don’t think I want to go that far.

I’m not going to complain about it. It’s fine with me.

As long as I’m with you.

Although I would prefer that you never die.

“You were awake, finally.”

“Hey, Earth to Lyre. It would be time to move on.”

“You know you’re going to get fat if you don’t move. You will even turn into a zombie! And if you don’t open your eyes, you’ll end up seeing inside your own body.”

“… Stop with your nonsense…”

“…”

“…”

“What is that?! Hahahahaha!”

“A kind of tribal painting. I learned to do it in my spare time.”

“I believe that the American people used it to distinguish themselves socially.”

“So, what message did you want to send me? Haha!”

“Hmmm. None.”

“But you looked worried while you were sleeping, so I figured that would make you laugh.”

“… Yes. I’ve been having some pretty weird dreams lately.”

“Oh! You manage to remember your dreams?”

“Yes.”

“Another feat of the great Lyre.”

“Not you?”

“Well, let’s say it’s a little more selective. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.”

“Maybe it depends on our location… Or our condition… Or the way we sleep…”

“I don’t think you should philosophize so much on this.”

“So, what are these dreams about?”

“… These days I see a girl.”

“It’s not someone I know. And yet…”

“I feel like I know her.”

“I think she’s talking to me about herself. She talks to me about a whole bunch of things.”

Maybe…

“The nightmare the other night… I think it was her too.”

“But it wasn’t her.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“It wasn’t her voice. But I believe it was addressed to her.”

“… So, you dream of a girl.”

“That you don’t know but that you seem to know.”

“Wasn’t that your younger mother?”

“No.”

“It wasn’t her voice.”

I think so.

“… Your body is complicated to manage, isn’t it?”

“…”

“Manage your delusions, control your emotions, channel your power.”

“Don’t you think that’s a lot for a girl of your age?”

“I don’t see any worries to have.”

“People our age just has to worry about the future, to decide which or which school to go to. Dreaming of a perfect future…”

“While you, you run after an ideal, save the world and find your mother.”

“Don’t you think that’s a bit much, for you?”

“… What message do you want to send me?”

“You’re not strong enough.”

“You must have thought about it, right?”

“When you go to meet the source of all this, how are you going to proceed?”

“Are you going to pray for a holy spirit to come and save you? Are you going to rely on your special ability?”

“… You have to learn, more than anything you’ve ever done.”

“You have to build on what you have already learned, and if possible, learn more.”

“You say it like it’s that simple…”

“For us, this is not the easiest thing.”

“But you can do it.”

“You are capable of miracles. So, you can do that well.”

“We don’t have time.”

“Of course, we have time. Either way, nothing worse can happen… I think.”

“You have to get strong if you want to protect what is dear to you.”

“… I would like to.”

“But I don’t have the miracle recipe Hiko, I…- “

“Don’t worry. I’ll train you.”

“Sorry, but I don’t know if you can train me for anything… You couldn’t even beat me in a simple physical fight.”

“I carried you three times already, I can life you a fourth time.”

“…”

“You’re playing with words there.”

“It doesn’t change the fact that I’m not the one who’s fainting all the time.”

“…”

“Oh, you don’t answer?”

“Why are you provoking me?”

“Without reason. I was wondering if you were able to hit me.”

“Why would I do this?”

“You would have done it this morning, right?”

I will have done it?

“You’re powerful when you have something to defend, Lyre.”

“At that point, I thought I saw a wolf defending his territory.”

“You scared me very much…”

“Sorry for that…”

“You were right. I didn’t understand at the time.”

“I’ll take more care of you now.”

“Hey, you’re thirsty? You finished the gourd, right?”

“Uh… Yes, just now.”

“Just now, two hours ago. Unaware.”

“I would have managed to find you some water, if you had told me.”

“What a mule head.”

“Why are you pouting? Haha. Did I offend you?”

“No!”

“Hahahahaha!”

A warm fire under a starry night.

“I didn’t think you knew how to make a fire. Or rather, I didn’t think you would be able to make one with one arm…”

“Hearing you, I’m a good-for-nothing who only knows how to cry when nothing is going well.”

“Don’t be upset by that, I mean…”

“That’s true. I don’t see why I would get mad at you.”

“…”

“This time, this morning.”

“I wouldn’t have done anything to you.”

“But I was scared.”

“I was afraid of loosing something. I was afraid of my responsibility.”

“My instincts took over. But, in the end, it was me. I could never have hurt you, it’s not my type…”

“…”

“It worries me even more. When we get to the end boss, will you have the same speech?”

“… But thanks anyway. It reassures me, I guess.”

I love to see you smile.

“…”

“What’s that? Around your neck?”

“… Are you talking about that?”

“Yes.”

“It’s my mother’s necklace. She gave it to me before she died.”

“So… I guess I can think of it as a lucky charm.”

“…”

“Do you want to see it more closely?”

“Uh… If you don’t mind…”

“Catch it.”

… Oh.

The stone reflects the sky.

It looks like all the stars are concentrated inside of it.

“What a wonderful necklace!”

“You think?”

“Yes, yes.”

“You can have It, then.”

“Eh?”

“No, no.”

“It belonged to your mother, it’s yours now…”

“No, it’s yours now. It’s your… Birthday present!”

“By the way, when’s your birthday?”

“August 30.”

“…”

“What?”

“I still don’t know your age.”

“Is that why you absolutely wanted to know about my birthday?!”

“… I’m sixteen.”

“… I’m older than you in this case!”

“… When’s yours?”

“Wouldn’t tell you.~”

“Stop with your child play! I gave you mine.”

“I paid for it. I don’t owe you anything.”

“… Take your necklace back.”

“No, he’s yours now.”

“You will need his blessing more than I do.”

“…”

A present?

“A flower?”

“No.”

“…”

“It was fast.”

“… Stop looking at me like that, I feel like you’re going to bite me.”

“What would you have wanted?”

“What would I like?”

“… Oh, I have an idea! Try to read my thoughts. In you find it, I’ll tell you my birthday.”

If I could, I wouldn’t ask you!

“Is that so? I shouldn’t have asked you, then.”

Ah… Why am I have such a hard time figuring you out.

“You have three tries.”

What could Hiko want?

“A telescope.”

“It would have been nice, but no.”

“A time machine.”

“When could you have brought this to me? No.”

Something I can bring to you?

“…”

“A..-“

“Ok, we stop here.”

“… I think I went too far. I was born on…”

“A star!”

“I’ll bring you a star!”

“You’re losing it Lyre, you can’t bring me a star, haha.”

“Then I’ll bring you a piece of the moon!”

“…”

“… It’s been more than three tries.”

“…”

“It was not this. But thank you for your involvement.”

“And to be honest, I was born… August 29th.”

Cheater!

“You’re a few hours grower than me!”

“Hahaha!”

I think I’m starting to enjoy this life.

Something has changed.

This trip changed me.

In such a short time, I have learned so much…

“We’ve come a long way here. We should be out of town tomorrow I think.”

“Are you in good shape for tomorrow?”

“Yes, everything is okay!”

“In that case, I’ll go to bed.”

Maybe I should make a bed for him, with one of my flowers…

“What? You want to sleep with me again?”

“No! Fool!”

“You’re going to touch me again…”

“I swear, I didn’t do anything!”

“But I wasn’t serious, it was a joke. Don’t go to bed too late, we have to leave early tomorrow.”

“It goes without saying.”

I want to protect everyone, yes.

So, is wanting to protect someone in particular, is the same?

Sometimes you will be overcome with chaotic dilemmas.

But… Your distinction as a human will allow you to make the right choice.

Have I chosen the right route?

*Cling*

Today, I have three lives under my responsibility.

In the future, it will be more.

Astronomically much more…

I have to do it.

This Is my dream!

That night I didn’t sleep.
