Chapter 9:

Origin of Katie?

Void in the Realm

The next morning, Dr. Myra woke up and got ready. She grabbed Katie and set it up after which she went down the stairs to grab her breakfast in the kitchen. The kitchen was vast. It had a huge sophisticated machine with a simple design. Once she approached the food machine, voice recognition was activated. There was a huge list of cuisines from which she could choose. She picked American. She chose pancakes with maple syrup. Once she chose those options, within seconds the machine-made pancakes were right in front of her and served it in fine dining style. Kendra was awestruck and enjoyed her breakfast.
She headed out and there was a vehicle ready to pick her up. “Good morning ma'am!” the driver said. “You can call me Kendra,” Dr. Myra insisted. “Sure! Have a seat. Do you need to stop somewhere before heading to the lab, Kendra?” the driver asked. “We could go straight to the lab,” she said while getting comfortable inside the car. They headed straight to the lab and she went straight to Dr. Luther’s office. Luther was sitting with his VR glasses outside of his office room and it looked like he was testing a software. “Hello Dr. Myra! Welcome, how are you enjoying your stay so far?” Luther asked. “Hello Dr. Luther! I am enjoying the stay. Thank you. Can we discuss the project now?” Kendra was eager to know why she was given such good care even if they had seen her for the first time.
“Yes, before that let me show you workspace. Right this way,” Luther navigated to her office. The room was huge and it had its own conference room separately and there were a lot of products surrounded. Her PC looked so extraordinary. It was huge and there was a super transparent wireless keyboard. When she touched it, it had all kinds of colors. Kendra was excited to work there even before knowing her project. “Let us go to the conference room and discuss,” Luther insisted. When Luther swung his hand in the air as if he was a conductor of an orchestra, a screen appeared and a holographic video started playing.
After the introduction video and discussion of company policies and other things, Luther said, “Now you are in charge of building this machine, “Luther said. Kendra was so excited about the gadgets and technology around her that she did not pay any attention to anything else. “I am in charge of building what now?” Kendra asked. “You will be building a device that translates our language to English and vice versa. And not only that, we should make sure when someone speaks a single sentence, it should automatically start talking to them in that language,” Luther gave the project description. Kendra was surprised. This is the project she is working on in her universe and Katie is a sophisticated version of that device. And the description he mentioned matched with Katie except that it has other features as well.
“Wait! Did I build Katie here in this universe in the past? Wow, this is huge,” she thought to herself and was out of air and wanted to breathe some fresh air. “I need some air,” Kendra said. “Yes, please go to the oxygen room right away,” Luther said. Luther directed her to the Oxygen room and she felt better. “Are you okay Dr. Myra,” Luther asked when she returned back. “I am good, thank you! And yes, sure I will be able to build this,” Kendra gave her word. “Great, you could start from right now. Please let me know if you need any information regarding this, any specific software or anything for that matter,” Luther said and headed out of the office.
Kendra was so excited about the project in hand and started working on it right away. She started to gather data. She suddenly felt like she was not alone in her office. She heard a sniffing sound but she did not see anyone. Something approached her but she could not see anything. Kendra heard a bark. “Rando stop!” she heard a voice from the back. She turned and it was Leona. “What are you doing here Leona and what did I just hear?” Kendra asked, walking towards her.
“Hello Kendra! This is Rando, dad says he is sick. He is now in the lab,” Leona described her pet. “We adopted him two years ago. Rando has only two eyes. Lev and I were keeping him in secret for a year and after that, our parents found out. They asked us to give him up for adoption last month but I wanted to keep him. So, I brought him to the lab and hid him. Last week I am not sure what happened, he became invisible completely. I come here every day to feed him. Before you came, that room inside of this workspace was unoccupied so I let him stay there,” Leona explained. “That’s amazing. Hello Rando!” Kendra looked around and called him. “Woof,” Rando barked and brought her a piece of paper with an article. “Oh yes, this was the article that came with the pet when we adopted him. It had weird made-up dates so we ignored it.” Leona said. That article was dated 02-03-2090.
