Chapter 2:

A Day in the Life of Mai

Machines of War

Beep, beep! Beep, beep! Was the smoke alarm going off? No, it was the alarm clock on Mai Bell's night stand. Her baby blue eyes slowly opening as she turned her alarm off. She garbed her star pillow and sank even lower into her dark blue comforter. She knew what day it was, and she had been dreading the arrival for weeks. Her little brother, Max, rushed into her room and hopped onto her bed.

"Wake up!" He yelled, bouncing on her bed. "Today is the day!" Her mother then came into her room and scooped Max into her arms mid jump.

"Don't just wake your sister up like that. You know this is a stressful day." She scolded, then started to walk out of the room. "Get some good rest honey, there'll be breakfast waiting when yours downstairs." She said to Mai before walking our of her room and closing the door. Today was not going to be nice. At least she had Kelly to go through this with her. They'd been studying together for months, and they often go to the gym too. She sighed, tossing her star pillow aside and pulling herself out of her bed. Her short pink hair was not coporating as she tried to brush it down and into her usual low pigtails. She yawned, pulling a white jacket over medium blue tank top, similar to the color of the uniforms of the academy she was taking the exam for. She figured they would need to change for the exams, so she wanted to dress lightly. She slipped into some jeans leggings, then walked downstairs. Her mother smiled at her, then slid her a plate of pancakes, sausage, and toast.

"Good morning Mai." Her father says, smiling at her as Max latched himself onto her left foot. He giggled, hugging on tighter as she tired to pry him off. She sighed, then took a seat next to her father at the dining room table and smiled at her father.

"Hi dad!" She said, then started poking at her food. She wasn't exactly excited for the exams this morning. They had to go almost exactly after they got done eating. Mai knew her parents were always gonna be there for her, and she had Kelly. What could go wrong?
