Chapter 18:

The Skeleton & the Idiot Sorceress' Journey Begins

The Skeleton & The Idiot Sorceress

After quite a long trek down the mountain, we made it to the bottom. We walked through a bit of brush and shrubbery which eventually led to a dirt path.

"So where are we going now Mr. Arno?" Erika asked.

"Let me think for a moment." I replied.

I wasn’t really sure where to go. It had been so long since I'd been in the outside world. I had no idea if any of the places I knew were still even around. Erika wasn't any help either considering this was her first time in the outside world.

"We’ll just keep on this path until we find a town or something. There is one thing for sure, we are going to have to find a merchant to purchase some essential gear from." I said.

"What do you mean? I'm pretty sure I have everything I need in my backpack."

"I would disagree. You have a sleeping bag and some pots and pans. The other 95% of your belongings are basically just clothes and miscellaneous junk. I can't even comprehend why someone would need so many articles of clothing?"

"My goblin parents packed me this bag. They wanted to make sure I had plenty of outfits."

"Even if, there are a number of things we’ll need if we’re going to be traveling. First thing is I definitely need to get some new robes, specifically ones that can conceal my face."

"Why would you need to conceal your face?" She asked curiously.

"Undead for the most part are feared by most humans in this kingdom. I need to make sure to conceal that I'm a skeleton for our own safety." I articulated to her.

"That's kind of rude. How can people judge you without knowing you?"

"That's just how it is. Necromancy is very frowned upon by the consensus of society."

"I don't understand, why do people dislike it so much?"

"Many see it as a taboo act. Something that goes against the laws of the universe."

"I see." She responded, seeming like she was losing interest in the current subject (likely because I was using big words she probably didn't understand).

I decided to bring the conversation back to the task at hand,

"There’s something that just came to my mind. Do you actually have any money?"

"Of course I have money. I made sure to bring all my savings with me." She pulled out a pink bag that was about the size of her palm.

It seemed like she actually did have a decent amount of funds, the bag seemed fairly full. With that amount we should be able to acquire some decent gear.

"Let's see how much you have." I said.

Erika loosened up the drawstring of the bag and opened it up. I looked inside and... "What are those?"

"What do you mean it's just money?" She responded.

The bag wasn't filled with gold or silver coins. It wasn't even filled with any type of metal coin for that matter. What was in the bag were dozens of round pieces of tree bark with engravings on them.

"You do understand that goblin money's no good to humans, right? Those have absolutely no value in the outside world."

Goblins typically don't have a lot of access to precious metals like gold, so they round off pieces of tree bark and use that as their currency to exchange goods. It really wasn’t that great of a monetary system. Just from looking at them, I'm sure they would be quite easy to counterfeit.

"I didn't know that. How are we supposed to get human money then?" She said, perplexed.

"Do you have anything of value we can sell? You have a lot of clothes maybe could se-"

"No, not happening." She cut me off.

"Okay then do you have anything else we can-"

"No, you're not selling my stuff." She quickly cut me off again.

She appeared to be quite attached to her belongings. I wish she wasn't being so difficult. We needed money and the quickest way to get it would be to sell some belongings.

"How do you expect us to get money to buy stuff then?" I huffed.

"Don't you worry your little skeleton head, Mr. Arno! I'm confident we'll figure something out. We've already been through so much already."

"Fine whatever." I said, reluctantly giving into her (at least for now).

She smiled and laughed a bit. We then proceeded to start making our way down the path ahead of us not sure what lay ahead. We had a long journey ahead of us. Hopefully luck would be on my side for once.
