Chapter 5:

What Do You Want To Do?

On the Railway Wire

The new morning came slowly, with the sun rising, ready to go on its adventure again. Saturday - usually the most boring day of the week for Tetsudo. As the sun was already in the air, flattened out behind a lonely cloud, and as the wind could be heard quietly whistling behind the closed windows and pulled veils in his room, Tetsudo rose up from his bed.

As he got dressed in his normal home clothes, he looked at the futon where Yai was sleeping like a rock. He kneeled above her and started to shake her.

"Oi, dummy, wake up. You said you wanted to go into the town, right? Come on, wake up."
Yai mumbled and/or whimpered something, but Tetsu couldn't hear her.

"Come on, don't be lazy and get up. You'll miss breakfast."
He went downstairs. Fuuka was in the living room reading a book.

"Good morning mom," Tetsudo said with a yawn.

"Good morning honey. Is Yai still asleep?"

"Yeah. We'll go out today, just so you know."

"Ohhh? A date? So you like her?"

"NO! WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?!" Tetsudo yelled at her.

"Shhh, don't be so loud, it's the weekend after all," Fuuka scolded her son. "I just see you as really close. You seem like such good friends. How come you never introduced her to me before actually?"

"Oh boy, it's getting messy... I have to finish this conversation before I dig myself into a hole."

"She just said she wanted to see my house since I've seen hers and so I show-"

"You've gone to her house?" Fuuka asked without waiting for Tetsudo to finish.
"Shit!"

"Well, kinda... But we never did anything!" he said with a face, red to the ears. "Anyway, this is not a date and I don't like her!"
Tetsudo scurried away back up to his room. His mom thought:
"I wonder if he's telling the truth or if he's just shy... Ah, my son is so cute sometimes!".

Her thoughts were interrupted by a scream from the upper floor.
She could hear someone say:

"Put some clothes on, you idiot! Why can't you wake up on time?!"

"They must be such good friends..." Fuuka smiled in relief.

"We'll be going!"

"Have fun both of you! Come home on time for dinner, okay?"
Yai and Tetsu waved goodbye to his mom and left. Noon - the hottest time of the day.

"So, what do you want to do?" Tetsu turned to Yai.

"Hmm, let's go to the... Center of town? Maybe go to a park?"

"Sure, that sounds nice."

And so they went on.

They got on the train, which they almost missed, and after a bit of a long ride, arrived in the center of Nagano. Despite being a weekend it was still very busy. The city never takes a break. Unlike the suburbs, where Tetsudo lived, there were a lot of people out, despite the blazing weather.

Yai and Tetsudo both walked around the big city for a while. Tetsudo hadn't really been to Nagano before, so for him it was a first time. He didn't know if Yai lived in the center of Niigata or somewhere in the suburbs. Not that it really mattered. They decided before they went to the Poppo Park to go to a mall and get something to eat. But instead of only eating at the mall, Yai decided she wanted to try out the arcades there. Tetsudo refused, but he was basically dragged to them by her and forced to play a few games with her (she lost all of them, because Tetsudo played games almost everyday).

After that debacle, Yai suggested they go to the park they wanted to go to. By now, it had gotten even hotter. So they went and got some ice cream to eat while sitting at the park. Yai basically ate her and Tetsudo's ice cream, with the amount of time she asked for a bite out of his. They finally arrived at the park, but because there were many people they had to sit on the grass with a bedding. After some small talk, Tetsu retrieved from the backpack he carried his mom's hanafuda playing cards and they played a few games of Koi-Koi.

By the time they finished their 5th game (Yai 2 - 3 Tetsu), it was already 6pm. If they wanted to get home on time for dinner, they need to be going. And so they did. However it didn't help that this, for the both of them, was their first time in Nagano City. And so they got lost, wondering around unknown streets, passing dark silhouettes and lonely cars. The wire lines above them buzzed with worry. The sun kept slowly descending, the sky was a deep orange. The anxious birds, standing on the electric poles, decided to fly away and leave Yai and Tetsudo to find their way home alone. Even with Tetsudo's phone, they were still clueless as to where they were supposed to go. If they kept moving around in circles, they would miss dinner or even the last train.

But thankfully they found their way to the station. 6:44. They will be late for dinner. "Better than nothing... Hope we're not grounded at least." Tetsudo thought as they waited for the train to come. There weren't many people on the platform with them, Yai and Tetsu looked lonely there. The sun in front of them shined, but was getting weaker. The sun was a fool. There were a lot of clouds behind them, so many that they looked a bit scary, coming like that from behind their back.

The train at last came and they got into an empty carriage. There were still 30 minutes until they got to the station and another 15 until they got home.

"Did you enjoy spending your day with me?" Yai asked.

"Didn't really have a choice to spend it any other way..." Tetsu mumbled "But I did... Like it..."

Yai smiled like she always does.
"I enjoyed it too. I've never had this much fun with someone."

"Glad to hear that..." Tetsudo was getting red.

"So, how do you want me to pay you back?"

"Pay me back?"

"You spent a lot of money on the food, the arcade and the ice cream. I have to be able to do something for you."

"Ummm..." Tetsu started thinking. He didn't think she would be the one to ask this question, so he hadn't thought about it.

"Are you thinking of something naughty?" Yai sly smiled.

"AM NOT!"

After a minute of thought, Tetsu said:
"You could help my mom with some house stuff... Like cleaning and cooking..."

"Is that all?" Yai's smile was still there.

"THAT'S ALL!" Tetsudo was all red.

The train finally arrived and they got off. The sun was nowhere to be seen, but its orange presence could be felt across the sky. It was still warm. There were mosquitos around. As the two started walking home, the moon was next to them, treading along the sky, watching and waiting from a far. The rails here were shinier than the ones above the town. The wires were prettier. The poles were warmer. The clouds behind looked hideous, black and ready to wipe away tomorrow as a day. Yai and Tetsu walked ahead and the station turned quiet.
