Chapter 8:

Chapter 8

School Days

"Sis, wake up," Sawyer said, lightly knocking on Ursula's door.

She was still asleep inside. Sawyer knocked again.

"Sis, please wake up. Mom's awake. I don't know what to say to her. She's asking why you aren't up yet," he said. He kept knocking.

She opened the door. Her cheeks were stained with tears.

"What's wrong?," Ursula asked, her throat dry.

"Did you not hear a single word I said?!," Sawyer asked.

"No, I didn't," she plainly said. Sawyer sighed.

"Sis, you should freshen up first. We got a call in the morning. I picked up the phone. They said they were keeping Dad's body in the morgue. We still have to explain things to Mom," he said.

"What?," she asked, confused.

"What do you mean by what?! Are you out of your mind right now? Don't you understand a single word I'm saying right now?!," Sawyer asked.

"Sawyer, stop! Don't yell, please," Ursula said, as she started crying. Sawyer sighed.

"Fine. I'll fix breakfast and you should shower," he said and left.

Ursula quickly showered and ate breakfast but she was engulfed in her thoughts all the time.

"Sis, listen to me. Sis!," Sawyer said.

"What, Sawyer?! What is your problem?!," Ursula yelled.

"What's wrong with you?! Stay strong. Isn't that what you said to me last night. Why aren't you doing that, then?! Why are you acting like this?! You know you're the eldest daughter. You know you need to take care of Mom. Then, why are you acting like this, sis. Get a hold on things!," Sawyer said.

"But, Sawyer, it's difficult. I know I have to do things. I know I have to be responsible right now because Mom's sick. But, Sawyer, I can't! I can't do this! I totally understand every single thing you've been saying up until now. But, I can't! I just can't! I know I have to talk to the authorities now. But, I don't want to, Sawyer. I just don't!," Ursula said, burying her face in her hands.

Sawyer sighed.

"I know you've been very sensitive since your childhood, sis. But, I can't blame you. You've always been so observant of everything. You're amazing, sis, and I understand that you're very emotional. But right now, you have to do this! You're the only one, sis!," Sawyer said, rubbing her sister's shoulders.

Suddenly, their mother descended the stairs.

"What's wrong? Why are you crying, Ursula?," she asked. Ursula was shocked and quickly wiped her tears.

"No, it's nothing. It's absolutely nothing, Mom," she said.

"Mom, why are you here? You should be in bed," Sawyer asked, trying to change the topic.

"I wanted to help you in the kitchen," she answered.

"No, we don't need your help. Go back to your room, Mom," Ursula said.

"I will. But first, tell me something. Why are you two so sad?," she asked. The siblings' eyes widened.

"Sad?! Who's sad, Mom? I'm not!," Sawyer said, laughing.

"Yeah. Who's sad?," Ursula asked.

"Don't lie. Ursula, you were crying. Tell me what's wrong," she asked.

"Dad's dead, Mom," Sawyer quickly answered.

Their mother nodded. They were shocked by her reaction.

Their mother sat down on one of the chairs.

"You're not shocked?!," Sawyer asked.

"I knew he was gonna die. I foresaw it," their mother said.

"What? You foresaw?," Ursula asked.

"Yes, my dear. I foresaw your Dad's death. I foresaw Nina's grandma dying, too," she said.

"But, Mom, how?!," Sawyer asked.

"You won't believe me if I told you," she said.

"No, we will. Tell us!," Ursula said.

Their mother shaked her head.

"No, I won't tell you. Let time reveal to you how I foresaw your Dad's death. Time is the greatest master of them all," she said.

She was staring at the backdoor in the kitchen. She had a hint of oldness to her.

Suddenly, her hair felt old and white to her children. It seemed as if she had wrinkles on her face. But then, they disappeared. She looked exactly like she always did. The same features as Ursula.

Then she went back upstairs.
