Chapter 9:

Chapter 9

School Days

The authorities arrived later in the afternoon. Ursula did all the talking. Their mother was back to her sick old self. She was in her room all the afternoon.

The authorities had informed them that nine people, other than Mr. Toliver had died in the accident.

The funeral was on Sunday. Ursula's friends attended the funeral, along with almost all of Jubilee. Mr. Toliver's friends were also present in a great number. All of this time, Mrs. Toliver was sick. At the funeral, she was only there for a short while. She was taken home as soon she started nauseating.

"Sis, we've got to get Mom her medicine from the next town," Sawyer said, a week later, when the siblings were having breakfast.

"How will we get it? I mean, our car is gone. Dad's gone, too," Ursula said.

"Why don't you go with your friends?," Sawyer asked.

"Sawyer, the next town is at a distance. We can't just walk to it!," she said.

"Who said you're walking?! Take the bus, idiot!," he said.

Ursula rolled her eyes.

"Like I don't know about the bus! Sawyer, what I want to say is that I can't take my friends with me just to buy medicine. What will they think?!," Ursula said.

"What the hell?! Fine, give me the money. I'll go on my bicycle. I'll take Bruce with me," he said.

"No, I'm not letting you go," she said.

"What? Why?!," Sawyer asked.

"Sawyer, try to understand. It's dangerous!," Ursula said.

"Dangerous?! Let me tell you what's dangerous. Mom not getting her medicine is dangerous! Mom dying is dangerous! Mom lying on her bed all day is dangerous! Mom not talking to us is dangerous! And Mom being sad all the time is dangerous!," Sawyer yelled.

"Sawyer, don't yell! Mom will wake up," Ursula said.

"You are so stupid and such a scaredy cat! You don't care if our mother's sick or not! You're just scared that you're alone and that Dad's not there anymore! You're just scared that something will happen to you if you go to that town because the next town is cursed! You think our Dad died because that town is cursed! That town is cursed because Jubilee is cursed, too," Sawyer yelled.

But he quickly clasped his hands over his mouth as he realized what he had said.

"Damn it!," he said and ran outside. Ursula heard the door open and Sawyer leave the house.

"Sawyer, wait!," she yelled as she started running after him. He was running at a fast pace. He was sweating. "He's gonna kill me! He's gonna kill me!," he chanted, as he ran.

"Sawyer, stop!," Ursula said, as she ran out of breath and sat down on the bench. She tried to catch her breath. She was confused.

Her head was filled with thoughts. She was so worried about her Mom and Sawyer that she didn't knew what was wrong with her own self. She had a fever and she didn't know.

She was angry. She picked up a can and threw it towards a tree. But, it didn't hit the tree. Instead, it hit a guy.

"Excuse me, are you out of your mind? Why did you throw this at me?," the guy asked.

He had black hair and blue eyes. He wore a black T-shirt tucked in his blue jeans pulled up to his waist with a black belt, along with a green jacket and black sneakers.

"I didn't threw it at you. I threw it at the tree," she said. Her head had started to hurt now. She was finally realizing she was sick.

"Well, it did hit me," he said.

"I said I didn't meant to," she said.

"You should apologize," he said, smirking.

"No, I won't. I didn't do it on purpose. So, don't expect an apology from me," she said.

The guy was getting angry. He grabbed her hand. But immediately let go when he felt her temperature.

"Are you sick?," he asked, worried.

"Sick? No, I don't think so," she said. But, then she passed out.

The guy was worried. He quickly picked her up in bridal style and took her to the nearest clinic he could find.

He left her in the doctor's care.
