Chapter 41:

Dragon of Destruction

Beyond The Void

The first thing I saw after entering the other room was Louise crashing into a nearby wall and coughing up a massive amount of blood.

“Louise!” I sprinted over and held her. “Are you alright?”

She groaned and struggled to get a word out. I placed her on the floor and turned to look at the blue dragon standing in the middle of the huge room.

“Damn it, not this again!” I yelled and charged away to the opposite end of the room, hoping to distract it from attacking Louise.

Just as I’d hoped, it opted to attack me, the bigger threat, and ignored Louise who now had time to heal up and relax for a bit.

The dragon suddenly opened its mouth and sent a blue ball made up of electricity flying towards me, which I barely managed to dodge.

Damn it, the first took nearly everything out of me, how am I gonna deal with this one?

I once again considered the last resort, but quickly shook my head, as I hadn’t even attempted to take it on yet. I had to stop considering it after every minor inconvenience that occurred to me.

I tried to circle around the dragon but it immediately swung a claw towards me, and actually connecting this time.

I had already crashed against a wall several times today but the repetition didn’t make it any less painful.

As I got up, my back flared up, causing me to fall back down in pain. Unfortunately, I had almost no time to take a breather or rest, as the dragon began overwhelming me with attacks. This time, I was basically drained, which made things a lot harder than the first time. I managed to dodge a couple of attacks, but eventually I got hit again and was sent tumbling backwards for the millionth time.

“You dumbass!” I sprinted away as the onslaught continued without mercy, and worse, without any signs of exhaustion from the creature itself. Trying to tire it out would be useless, since it would probably have enough energy to constantly go on the attack for the next few hours, while I had been drained to my last reserves due to mere minutes of combat. This comparison wasn’t fair at all.

I got so tired running around that I legitimately couldn’t move anymore, I had to catch my breath, and did my best to not throw up. The dragon took advantage of this and clobbered me once more, sending me flying to the other side of the room where I landed on the floor with an extremely hard crash. If I didn’t know better, I would have assumed that I’d at the very least broken a bone, if not a couple more.

This time, I was well and truly finished. My entire body felt like it was completely broken, I was totally dazed and it took all I had just to stay conscious.

Fuck it, I can’t keep that in reserve anymore…if I don’t use it now, I’ll die! There’s no helping it….

But before I was able to activate it, a familiar voice yelled from across the room.

“Thanks for distracting it for me, Jack!” Louise yelled as she managed to jump all the way up to the dragon’s head without worry since it had its back turned on her. She then balled her hands into a fist and punched right down into the dragon’s head, instantly shattering its skull, causing it to drop motionlessly to the floor.

My jaw dropped as I watched Louise land on the dragon’s corpse, then rush to help me.

“What, impressed?” She said, noticing my reaction.

“No, I was just surprised…that was kinda awesome.” I admitted.

“So, uh, no luck in the other room either, I presume?” Louise asked while she helped me up.

“Nah, there was another dragon there but no door or passageway or anything of the sort, really.”

“So what now, then?”

“Let’s head back to the main door for now.”

Surprisingly, the door in the middle had actually opened when we returned to it.

“So defeating those dragons was the requirement to unlock this door, huh?” She mumbled.

“Wait, hold on.” I grabbed her arm, stopping Louise in her tracks as she took a step towards it. “I have a bad feeling, I think Selphine might be waiting for us in the next room.”

“So?” She shrugged.

“We need to rest up a bit.”

“No we can’t, Emmett’s still holding off those masked men, remember?” She reminded me. “Who knows how long it’ll take for them to start rushing in, and once that happens, we’re officially and royally screwed. We can’t let that happen at any cost.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right, let’s just get on with it then.”

We then stepped into the doorway and came out to a long corridor which was closed in by two walls, leaving barely enough space for either of us. Louise walked in first, and I followed behind her.

“That’s one long corridor.” I noted as we walked, while admiring the paintings that were hung up on either wall.

It took us nearly five whole minutes to reach the end, which was another door that seemed very similar to the one we’d come in from.

Louise opened it and we found ourselves back where we’d started.

“What the-”Louise exclaimed.

“Dude, it was a straight line, how the hell did you manage to turn back from that?”

“I-I don’t know! We didn’t turn back, it doesn’t make any sense! I’d have to go past you.”

We then crossed the corridor again only to end up in the same place once more.

“What the hell is going on here?” Louise yelled in frustration.

“This house is playing tricks on us.”

“What do we do now?” She asked.

“Let’s go back through it one more time but slowly, surely there has to be some sort of detail or clue that we missed.”

“Alright then, let’s go.”
