Chapter 20:

Why Aren't You Coming to School?

From the Depths of an Emotionless Heart

A day had passed since Mika saw Saya with a boy. After waking up, he checked his phone, and there was a message from his mother:

"Hi Mika, I didn't want to call you as I thought you might be asleep, so I'm writing this message; The school called and they want you to come for the upcoming exams next week. I know you left the school, and it might seem meaningless, but they really want you to take the exams. I would like you to at least graduate by passing the final exams, even if you don't go to school. So please, take the exams. Love you! And don't forget to eat properly!" the message said.

Mika thought for a moment,

I guess there's no other choice, huh?

The exams were in a week, and he had no idea what the subjects were. He checked the cardboard boxes in his room where he had stored his textbooks.

I think I can call the class teacher,

After having breakfast, he sat in the living room and called his teacher.

"Hello?" said the voice on the other end of the line.

"H-hello, Mrs. Lily?"

"M-Mika, i-is that you?"

"Yes, it's me, teacher."

"WOW, it's been so long since we last talked. How are you?"

"I'm good, teacher. How about you?"

"I'm good too. I'm so glad to hear your voice. What's up?"

"Nothing much, teacher. I'm sorry to get to the point so suddenly, but I'm thinking of coming to school to take the exams next week, so I called to ask about the topics."

"O-oh, really? No problem, give me a second. I need to find the paper where all the exam topics are written."

"Sure."

After a while, Mika got all the exam topics from Lily.

So much stuff has piled up, hasn't it? Well, I'll do whatever I can in a week. It doesn't matter, but at least I'll take the exams and be done with it,

***

A week had passed. In his spare time, Mika studied the exam topics, and he managed to cover most of them. Monday had come, and he was getting ready for school.

Will these school uniforms even fit me? Well, I'll see when I wear them,

The clothes were a bit tight, It's okay, nobody will notice.

He picked up his bag and started cycling towards the school. He was planning to take four exams a day and finish in three days. He parked his bike.

Everything is the same as when I left.

He started walking towards his classroom. The exam was about to start in 5 minutes. He took a deep breath and entered the classroom, walking towards his seat. People who were talking to each other at first just looked, then their eyes were fixed on Mika in surprise, and they began to whisper to each other, looking at Mika.

In the meantime, Mika managed to sit at his seat in the back corner next to the window. When he glanced inside, he realized that everyone was silently staring at him.

Why are they looking at me?

After a moment, a blond boy came up to him.

"Hey, Mika! Long time no see!" he said with excitement.

"Yeah... Hi, Kai," said Mika in a flat tone. The others in the class were watching their conversation with curiosity.

"Mika!" an angry voice came from the back. Mika looked toward the source of the voice. It was his childhood friend Yuki.

"Hi, Yuki," said Mika in a normal voice.

"Where have you been?" Yuki asked angrily.

"Where was I? I was here - I mean at home," Mika replied.

"That's not what I mean, idiot!" Yuki said angrily. Kai started laughing beside them.

"Why are you laughing?" Yuki asked Kai angrily.

"Sorry, it's just funny to see how much you've been worried about Mika," Kai said, laughing.

"Wh-what are you saying?" Yuki blushed.

Mika thought to himself,

They must have something between them.

"So, why didn't you come?" Yuki asked, sounding angry.

"Why? Because I find it unnecessary, maybe?" Mika replied.

"WHAT?" Yuki was very surprised at Mika's response. Kai laughed beside them.

"What are you laughing at?" Yuki said, trying to push her red hair in Kai's face.

"Excuse me, I couldn't resist seeing you worried about Mika, you're cute," Kai said, laughing.

"Ugh, Kai, you're so stupid!" Yuki said, blushing in embarrassment.

The whole class was laughing at them. By now, Mika had an idea of what was happening.

"You two are dating, aren't you?" Mika said straightforwardly.

"Yes," Kai said casually.

"H-how did you know? I mean, I think it's something like that," Yuki said, embarrassed.

"It's clear from how you act," Mika said.

The class was surprised that Mika had noticed, and they were all quietly watching them. Some of them came closer to Mika to ask how he was doing. In the meantime, Yuki and Kai were having a romantic argument. Suddenly, Yuki punched Mika's shoulder.

"Ah! What are you doing?" Mika said.

"Are you started coming school then?" Yuki asked in an angry tone.

"No, I just came for the exams."

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN JUST FOR THE EXAMS?" Yuki asked, angry.

"What do you want me to do by coming here?" Mika asked. Yuki was taken aback by Mika's question.

"I-I mean, I don't know... I just wanted you to be with us," she said, hesitantly.

"Yuki... forgive her, Mika. She thinks she can ask you anything just because you're her childhood friend, but I'll take care of her, don't worry," Kai said, laughing.

"Thanks, Kai," Mika said, trying to understand.

"WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?" Yuki said angrily.

"Okay okay, it's over," Kai said, starting to stroke Yuki's head again. Everyone in the class was laughing.

"By the way, Mika, would it be a problem for you if I date Yuki? After all, you're her childhood friend, and I didn't want to be comfortable without asking you," Kai said, smiling.

"What?" Yuki looked at Kai in surprise. The class was silent and looking at Mika. Everyone was waiting to see what Mika's answer would be.

"Well, I don't have a problem with that. Besides, why are you making your relationship dependent on me? I'm not involved in your relationship," Mika said in a straightforward tone.

"But, you know, I mean -" Kai panicked.

"I believe you can make her happy, Kai. You've liked her since last year, right?" Mika said calmly.

"W-what!, how do you know that?" Kai asked panicking and embarrassed.

"Wasn't it obvious? Last year, you were always trying to be by her side. Anyway, that's what I think about it. I trust you," Mika said.

Everyone seemed relieved. Yuki, on the other hand, shouted, very embarrassed,

 "You two are idiots!"

At that moment, the teacher came.

"Everyone, take your seats, the exam is starting!"

"Yes, teacher!" everyone said in unison.

Kai, happy, and Yuki, embarrassed, started going back to their seats, looking at Mika. They were getting ready for the exam while distributing the papers.

Mika pondered,

If I don't feel like I want to leave, does that mean I want to stay?
