Chapter 3:

Labor day

Will you give this cute tsundere love?

“Um Johan, What the hell are we doing?” Nina grumbled.

“We’re celebrating Labor Day,” I happily replied as I cooked up a corn dog in the microwave oven.

“Isn’t it a bit early to be celebrating Labor Thanksgiving Day? It’s only September.”

“Oh? You have a Labor Day celebration in Japan?”

“Yes, it’s called Labor Thanksgiving Day and takes place on November 23rd. Some businesses also celebrate on May 1st. as well.”

“America usually just celebrates it on the first Monday of September.”

“So why are you celebrating it? You’re a neet.”

“It’s to honor a legendary streamer,” I stated proudly as I showed Nina my phone.

Nina looked at the phone in confusion.

“Be- Benny Be-an So?”

“His name is Benny Beansoup . He’s a funny streamer that made an infamous Labor Day video nearly a decade ago.”

“Hmm? So, his name’s Beansoup. Ugh, English can be such a pain to read,” Nina growled.

“Come to think of it, you’re always fluently speaking Japanese while I’m speaking English. I know some Japanese, but not enough to understand you like I do now,” I stated.

“Same thing for me as well. I just hear English coming from you, but I can just understand it perfectly.”

“Maybe we should try conversing in each other’s language.”

                                                                                    …

We attempted to converse in a single language, however, we didn’t make much progress. I was a little better at Japanese than Nina was at English, but I still didn’t know how to properly translate what I wanted to say.

“Guess we’ll just stick to the default,” Nina sighed.

“Do you want to speak in English that badly?” I asked.

“I mean, if you can understand me there’s no point. Mm.”

By the way she was acting, I could tell there was something her tsundere heart wanted. Time to think, did she want to speak English to impress me? No. She seemed to shoot that down. Hmm, was there something-

“HAH!? Why’s the bean guy putting beans in his computer!? That’s insane!” Nina yelled as she watched the labor day video.

That’s it.

“Want me to translate the video?” I asked.

Nina’s face lit up, telling me I guessed right.

“Alright. Let’s do this from the beginning…”

                                                                                   …

Nina laughed as the video ended.

“That Beansoup guy’s pretty funny. Though why are people calling him Cloth?”

“Oh, it’s more of an in-channel joke. See, he actually created an OC called Cloth a few years after making this video. Since Cloth has the same mustache as Benny does in this video, some people joke and say that’s live-action Cloth instead of Benny. There was even a whole fan game made starring Cloth as the main character,” I explained.

“So the whole reason you’re celebrating Labor Day is because of a meme?”

“Yeah, pretty much.”

                                                                               …

Once the corndogs were ready, we took them out and covered them in Mayo.

“Oh good, you have the good stuff,” Nina smiled.

“Of course, Japanese mayo is second to none.”

We lounged on the back porch and snuggled with each other as we devoured our mayo corndogs.

Naturally, I just had to wipe off some globs of mayo that littered Nina’s cheeks, causing her face to go bright red.

She responded by consuming the glob of mayo on my cheek. Once our faces were clean, we sat back and gazed up at the starry sky.

“Wanna watch more Beansoup?” I asked.

“Yeah, astrology’s not really my thing. Besides I wanna learn more about what you’re into besides me.”

We happily snuggled under the blanket as we watched Beansoup and laughed the night away.

                                                                            [End]
