Chapter 3:

So Close, Yet So Far…

A Universal Time: Redux

Genny and I run as fast as we can, until we eventually reach the forest.

“You do know where we're going, right Gen?” I ask.

Genny glares at me while we run. “Okay. I already told you not to call me that.”

Luckily, she didn’t hit me (this time.)

“When that dude was running away, I got a quick glance as to what his outfit looked like.”

I nod. “Coolcool, drop the deets then!” I respond, catching my breath as I spoke.

“He had a mask, with a small upside down sword on it. If you remember, that is what the Xcaliburs’ symbol is.”

I nod again. “That makes sense...” Bringing that name up to me was more than a bad memory. I was always a loner before Genny showed up. I really owe her one.

I seem a little down and caught up in bad memories after she said that name. Genny seemed to notice.

“...Hey. I’m sorry for bringing up their name, but you need to know so we have a clue as to where Olivia is.” Genny says. “…or at least could be.”

I nod yet again. I understood completely. I get it, it’s important for the mission.

Then, low and behold, our targets were looming over us like a boss catching you slacking off. It was The Xcaliburs’ headquarters, or secret lair if you will. Like the Joker or something!

“Ok, we need a plan before we bust in there.” Genny says. We hide behind trees so they can’t spot us right away.

“Yeah, I agree.” I respond.

“...ok. So, they have 4 well trained guards standing at the entrance. See em? If we can knock em’ out, we could get inside. But then again, we have to be careful about the security precautions they have.” I nod. We continue thinking.

“...you know...” Genny starts. She begins to grin. Genny only smiles anymore if she has something bad or evil in mind.

“If neither of those work, we could always do that plan.” She grins as she puts her hand on her sword. I caught on quick.

“Genny, no! We’re not doing that!”

“I mean… if we have to...” Genny suggests.

“NO! Absolutely not! Sure, they may have... You know what in my past, but that still doesn’t excuse the fact that they’re humans like you and I too!”

Genny’s grin fades as she moves her hand away from the sword. “You’re no fun.” She mumbles.

There’s some awkward silence before she gets an actual good idea.

“How about this. I use the dull edge of my sword to knock them out.”

Good start I guess?

Or, if you’re down for it, you could use some ice magic.” Genny suggests. I think for a second. Actually not a bad idea.

One problem though.

“I have no idea how to use ice magic Genny!” I practiced most types really except ice. That one was discovered after I stopped learning to use elemental stuff. To put it simply, I only know basic elemental magic.

Genny lightly kicks the dirt under her shoes. “Damn... I mean, I have been studying elemental magic for a bit, maybe I could try it?” Genny suggests. I think some more.

“...fine. But, what do we do if our plan fails?”

Genny thinks. “Plan B could be sneaking in another way.”

Finally! Something that doesn’t involve killing somebody!

“You studied the human body a bit ago, right? You should know weak points I think. That could possibly be our key to victory Emi.” I plan out in my head how it would (most likely) play out. After a little, I nod.

“Ok, but no killing them, got it?” She thinks for a moment before responding.

“Fine. No promises though.” I shrug.

“Eh, better than nothing I guess.” We sneak to the main entrance where 2 guards stood on each side.

2 girl mission against a terrorist organization that’s like the mafia. What could go wrong?

A lot.

A lot can go wrong.
