Chapter 168:

Numakawa vs Red Reaper

En Passant Grandmaster

Rather than summoning a Fokker and Sopwith camel, Red Reaper merely summoned a simple chessboard.

"So you get to play as white. Very well, make your move, or let the timer run out since you've only got 3 minutes on the clock," he glared as he sat down at the black end of the board.

"I play as white!? Then my victory is assured!" Numakawa smirked as he sat down at the white end of the board.

He then opened by moving his pawn to g4, signifying his blind faith in the Grob opening. Red Reaper countered by moving his pawn to d5.

"You fool! The Double Grob was your only hope at stopping me, now you're finished! Behold the Grob gambit!" Numakawa gloated as he moved his bishop to g2.

"The double Grob? Oh how terrible, for you," Red Reaper sneered as he captured the pawn at g4 with his bishop.

"FOOL! Now I can unleash the Fritz gambit! Numakawa laughed as he moved his pawn to c4.

Red Reaper simply captured said pawn, however, that allowed Numakawa to gleefully capture the pawn at b7 with his bishop. "And now your rook is lost.

"Oh, the Grob gambit is so terrible, and it shows," Red Reaper sneered as he moved his knight to d7.

"Ha, ha! And now I am up a rook!" Numakawa gloated as he captured the rook on a8 with his bishop.

"And I have the edge," Red Reaper sneered as he captured said bishop with his queen.

As Numakawa moved his knight to f3, Yuzuha began to see a glimmer of hope. "I don't know how much Numakawa-kun enlarging his brain is truly helping, but it looks like his odd plan might work," she thought as Red Reaper moved his knight to e5.

"And that is check! Your castling rights are relinquished!" Numakawa gloated as he moved his queen to a4.

"I don't need to castle," Red Reaper retorted as he moved his king to d8.

"Oh, but you oh so needed to, because now, your king is mine. Behold, this is what you get for not countering with the double Grob; mate in 2!" Numakawa declared as he captured the knight at e5 with his knight.

Indeed, if Red Reaper moved his queen to b7, Numakawa could capture the pawn at f7, forcing the king to c8. Then, he could move his queen to e8, winning the game, but that scenario was only probable in Numakawa's idiotic mind.

"Well that was easy. Checkmate, herr brain boy. Looks like your remains will be scooped into a dunce cap," Red Reaper sneered as he captured the rook at h1 with his queen, winning the game.

Numakwa stared in disbelief at the board. "B- Bakana! How could I lose!? The Grob is the ultimate opening. Only the Double Grob can counter it and even then, the Coca-Cola gambit ensures victory for white!"

"So delusional. Well, auf wiedersehen."

Numakawa's head and body suddenly began to bloat and expand rapidly. "W- What is happening!? I can't-"

Before Numakawa could finish, his head and body exploded, sending his blood and guts flying everywhere. Yuzuha screamed in terror as she became drenched in Numakwa's blood, and bits of his guts and bones flew into her hair.

"And nothing of value was lost. Now, let's move on to you, fräulein," Red Reaper sneered as he pulled out his pistol and "killed himself".

Yuzuha stared in horror as Red Reaper resurrected before her and summoned the Ultima-master. "Wh- What's happening!? H- He killed Numakawa and summoned that thing... W- What's he going to do!?"

Yuzuha got her answer as Red Reaper received a new DESPER. In the glow of the Ultima-master's red eye, Red Reaper turned to face Yuzuha. "That's one down, six to go. Though I guess it will only be five left once I'm done with you."

...

Okisato blinked as he found himself back in London. "Looks like it took me about 50 minutes to get back. But was that fast enough?"

His thoughts were interrupted by a bloodcurdling scream, echoing throughout the city.

"That voice... Zenihara-san!"

...

PTSD from her match against Kamoshida began to overtake Yuzuha as she began scurrying away in fear and shouting for help at the top of her lungs as Red Reaper began to approach her.

Behind a wall, Zago hyperventilated in terror. "What WAS that thing he summoned!? And he killed Numakawa-senpai, he- he'll pay for that! B- But he killed himself and resurrected, and now he has a ne DESPER!? Zenihara-snepai's in trouble. But I'm too scared. I can't move. That reaper terrifies me. The thing he summoned... The thing he summoned..."

As Zago became consumed by fear over the sight of the Ultima-master, Yuzuha and Red Reaper ran by. It was now or never to step up to the plate. If Zago couldn't move, Yuzuha would die. But if he did, there was no guarantee someone of his skill level could take down an aggravated Red Reaper.

...

Okisato ran to where he thought he heard the scream, but only found a large pool of blood and guts. For the first time in a long time, grief overtook him as he surmised he was staring at the remains of one of his clubmates. "... No, this might not be one of them, but it's likely it is. I doubt this is Zenihara-san, so who could it be?"

"Ugh... Ugh..."

Okisato turned to notice someone attempting to climb out of the river Thames. At first, he assumed that perhaps it was a witness, but his expression quickly darkened as the mysterious person pulled themself out of the river and turned to face Okisato.

"Well that was a long, audacious swim. I nearly cramped up and drowned. This is why we shouldn't have dragged Mimoko Inoue into this. She's too strong for members like me."

It was Dr. Hyde, one of the Desperados that had initially dragged Mimoko, Iori, and Carol to London.

"How the hell are you alive?" Okisato glared.

"Simple, my losing wager was to swim the whole Thames, and if I couldn't I'd drown and die, but as you can see, I swam the whole thing. And best of all, my DESPER's charged, and I see you're trying to get somewhere quickly. Well tough luck, because it's over."

Dr. Hyde began inching towards Okisato, but suddenly collapsed with a mighty thud. "Guess that idiot got tired out from his swim. Well I gotta hurry," Okisato shrugged.

As he ran off, Tsar Girgori and Svetlana watched from atop a building. "Почему? Почему ты не позволяешь мне встретиться с ним лицом к лицу [Why? Why won't you let me face him]!?" Svetlana glared.

"Потому что ты просто снова проиграешь ему, а я все еще нуждаюсь в тебе. Кроме того, Фантом уже здесь. Не о чем беспокоиться [Because you'd just lose to him again, and I still have need of you. Besides, Phantom is here. There's no need to worry]," Grigori snickered.

...

Yuzuha continued to run as Red Reaper slowly marched after her. "You run fast for a non-soldier covered in blood and guts, fräulein. But it ends here. The DESPER does have a range, though I think like with your friend, I'll fight you on the ground. And this time, no one will show up to save you," Red Reaper glared as he prepared to activate his DESPER.

Okisato noticed Red Reaper and charged for him. If he could launch himself in front of Red Reaper before his DESPER activated, he'd be the one that'd be challenged. And it looked like he was going to make it, until suddenly he found himself staring directly at a masked figure.

"Thou shan't interfere in the reaping of souls," Phantom stated as he appeared to activated his DESPER. A blinding flash of light erupted, and Okisato shielded his eyes. Now, there was no way he would make it in time to save Yuzuha.

"And it looks like I play as white. Now how will you fare against me now?" Red Reaper sneered as he shielded his eyes and walked towards the chessboard his DESPER had created.
