Chapter 169:
En Passant Grandmaster
Okisato gritted his teeth in frustration as the light faded and Red Reaper and Yuzuha were nowhere to be seen. "Shit! There's no way she'll beat or draw against that monster. I'm the only one here capable of that!"
"You seem troubled. But worrying about others before yourself, will lead to doom," Phantom stated.
Okisato turned to notice that a chessboard had appeared before him. He stared at Phantom for a bit before glaring and heading towards the board.
"Okisato Tanabe, I've had my eye on you for a while. Now show me your full capabilities," Phantom glared.
"I think you might actually be one of the greatest enigmas I've faced yet," Okisato glared as he opened the game by moving his pawn to e4.
"Care to explain?" Phantom asked as he moved his pawn to e5.
"You never activated your DESPER, heck I'm not even sure if that "DESPER" you got is even real, but I can't read you. Nor can I see your profile. All that comes up is question marks on all fronts," Okisato stated as he moved his knight to f3.
"Just like Iori Ishikiridokoro, you saw through my little trick. But you are also wrong. My DESPER is real," Phantom stated as he moved his knight to c6 and placed his DESPER on the table.
Okisato stared at the device. Indeed, it did look real, nor did it seem broken, yet something was off about it. "Care to pull back that mask if I win?" he asked as he moved his knight to c3.
"No, though I will say you played just as Iori Ishikiridokoro did up until this point," Phantom stated as he moved his knight to f6.
A sadistic grin appeared on Okisato's face. "Then I'm gonna continue mimicking her, cuz knowing her, she'd definitely play THIS! Happy Halloween!" he snickered as he entered the Halloween gambit by capturing the pawn at e5 with his knight.
"Knights are valuable pieces, and this gambit just throws one away, all for what? Control of the board can change with a blunder," Phantom glared as he captured the knight at e5 with his knight.
"What makes you think I'd blunder? Now time to push the pawns and kick the knight," Okisato snickered as he moved his pawn to d4.
...
Elsewhere, Utami found herself face-to-face with the malnourished young man, and not only that, she recognized him too.
"Kazuya-ni..."
Indeed, the malnourished young man was none other than Kazuya Enoki, Utami's older brother. After being busted out of prison by Svetlana, Kazuya had essentially been transferred to Tsar Grigori's gulag boot camp and confined in worse conditions than before. The only form of compassion he received was some chess tutoring from the warden and the minimum amount of food and water needed to keep him alive. The reason for this was to foster his hatred towards the chess club in hopes that when released, he could take down a few members. Upon learning Utami was in London, Grigori decided now was the time to see if he had truly evolved as a player.
"U-ta-mi, I've been waiting to see you again," Kazuya sneered as he activated his DESPER.
The scenery quickly changed to that of the roof of the Shogikawa gakuin high school. Just like when Kazuya fought Okisato, a life-size chess board appeared, but this time Utami was playing instead of held hostage in a piece. Utami noted that the scenery looked exactly like the roof of the high school, even down to the cracks on the floor. However, what struck her as odd was the fact that the sun was beginning to set, and the fact that the fencing that had been put up after the incident was present.
" Th- That fencing wasn't there when you kidnapped me. D- Did we warp back to Japan!?" Utami cried.
"Yes, now you'll get to die here where you should have died weeks ago. A shame I can't stuff you in a pawn again, no actually when you lose, you'll be imprisoned in a white pawn before exploding to bits!"
Utami trembled, and went silent before clenching her fist. "If I win, you jump off the roof of the school."
"Huh? You talking back to me? Want me to add in a preliminary beating before the exploding pawn?"
"I said, you lose, you jump off the roof of this school!"
Kazuya scowled and pulled up his WWCF card. "You talk back to me and have a rating only 99 points lower than me!? That's it, When I win, I get to rape you before you're imprisoned in a life-size pawn and blown to bits."
Utami shot Kazuya a look of pure disgust and contempt as she headed towards the white end of the board. "Despicable, but I guess it runs in your blood," she glared as she moved her pawn to e4.
"It's your blood too," Kazuya sneered as he moved his pawn to e5.
Utami went silent and moved her knight to f3, prompting Kazuya to move his knight to c6. She then moved her knight to c3 while Kazuya moved his knight to f6.
"Well look at that, you're playing a typical game, but grinding low-level opponents to get that rating, probably didn't teach you proper chess," Kazuya sneered.
"What gives you the right to say that?" Utami glared.
"Talking back again? Father would have slapped you, and I would too if the DESPER allowed it."
"Scum, I am not the scared timid woman I once was, I'm Mimoko-sama's mad holy warrior!" Utami roared as she captured the pawn at e5 with her knight.
The move completely threw Kazuya off guard as he was expecting her to move her pawn to d4, but none the less, his sadistic grin only grew wider. "You're mad alright, considering you just threw away a knight. Rape n' death's a step closer for you," he sneered as he captured the knight at e5 with his knight.
"You clearly don't know of the Halloween gambit," Utami glared as she moved her pawn to d4.
"Of course I have, and it's trash. I can counter it perfectly," Kazuya glared as he moved his knight to g6.
"Then try," Utami glared as she moved her pawn to e5, causing Kazuya to grit his teeth in frustration as he moved his knight to g8.
"You sure seem flustered for a gambit you claim to know how to counter," Utami snarled as she moved her bishop to c4.
"You shut up! I know the lines!" Kazuya glared as he moved his bishop to b4.
"An empty threat," Utami thought as she moved her queen to f3.
"CHECK you little whore! How dare you try to act tough towards me! You're nothing but a weak little girl, so stop deluding yourself that you're confident. You were only conceived to be a pawn," Kazuya sneered as he captured the knight at c3 with his bishop.
"I am NOT a pawn," Utami snarled as she captured said bishop with her b-pawn.
"You are, and you'll die a pawn. That's why I trapped you in a pawn during that game, so that you'd die just before you could promote into a queen you delusionally think you are. Oh if only Mimoko was playing me, she would have killed you like she did her brother," Kazuya sneered as he moved his queen to e7.
"DON'T YOU DARE INSULT MIMOKO-SAMA LIKE THAT!" Utami shouted as she slammed her pawn down on h4.
"I can and will. Just like I'll capitalize on your wasted move," Kazuya sneered as he captured the pawn at h4 with his knight, which Utami immediately captured with her rook. "Tch, well the game's even anyway. I'll show you why I'M the prodigy of the Enoki family, not you, not Nagi, not father, ME!" he sneered as he moved his pawn to d6.
Utami stared at the board before looking Kazuya straight in the eye and glaring at him. "I cast myself aside from that toxic family months ago," she snarled as she moved her bishop to g5.
"Enoki blood still runs in your veins, nor have you even changed your surname. You're truly a timid and scared little girl," Kazuya sneered as he captured said bishop with his queen.
Utami stared at the board before smirking and bursting into maniacal laughter. "I haven't changed? Check the spelling. The kanji used to spell my surname IS different."
Kazuya pulled up his WWCF card and saw that Utami had indeed changed the kanji on her surname. "Abandoning the Enoki family like that, you will pay with your life."
"No, and you'll never get a chance to raise your hand against me ever again. Now begins your comeuppance, check!" Utami declared as she captured the pawn at f7 with her queen, forcing Kazuya's king to d8.
But she wasn't done yet. She then moved her queen to f8, once again leaving Kazuya with only one legal move, this time king to d7. And after that, she moved her pawn to e6, making it 3 straight moves in a row where Kazuya had only one legal move.
"Ngh, you think this series of forced checks will do anything? This is just you pounding on cement!" Kazuya shouted as he moved his king to c6.
"I said you'd never get a chance to raise your hand against me, and that's what this is, check," Utami glared as she moved her queen to e8.
This time, Kazuya had a choice of how to respond, and chose to move his bishop to d7, however, he was quickly left with only one legal move, king to b6, after Utami captured the bishop at d7 with her queen. Utami then moved her rook to b1, leaving Kazuya with a choice of either moving his king to a5, or his queen to b5. Kazuya chose the former, prompting Utami to move her rook to b5, sending his king to a4.
Now reality had begun to sink in for Kazuya that he was going to lose. "No, no, NO! I'm superior to you! You're a timid wreck! You can't beat me!" he shouted as Utami moved her rook to b4, forcing his king to a5.
"You said back then how fitting it would be if you were beaten with the mad queen I seek to be. Well today that became a reality. Checkmate," Utami glared as she slammed her queen down on a4, winning the game.
Kazuya began going pale as a sheet as the board vanished and he found himself scurrying towards the fence and climbing over it. "NO! NO! I DON'T WANT TO DIE! That's right! Put a cushion below to ease my fall!"
"No, you wanted to become a martyr by jumping off the roof and dying, so let's see if you're able to do that now."
A look of terror and read overtook Kazuya's face as he reached the top of the fence and threw himself over it. A bloodcurdling scream escaped his lips as he plummeted towards the ground, landing on his back with a rumbling thud.
Utami gazed down at his motionless body before heading towards the stairs. This time, the door was unlocked, allowing Utami to descend to the ground with no issue and approach Kazuya.
Blood oozed out of Kazuya's mouth as his vision began to fade. He hadn't died instantly, but was still going to die.
"So you did survive, or at least not die instantly. Good, I hope you suffer in hell with the others," Utami glared as Kazuya hacked up one last glob of blood before dying.
On the roof, Kazuya's DESPER emitted a puff of smoke signifying his true demise, and unlike Red Reaper, he wouldn't be reviving.
"And now I've killed both my brothers. Mimoko-sama..."
"U- Utami-chan!?"
Utami turned to notice Maida rushing out towards her.
"Maida-sensei? Why are you here?"
"I was inside the school and heard a scream and a crash- ..! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! E- Enoki-kun! I- Is he-"
"Dead? Yes, he used his DESPER and lost the match."
Maida regained her composure and stared at Kazuya's corpse. "So this is the legacy of the Enoki family. Pitiful. Utami-chan, do you happen to know where Enoki-kun's DESPER is?"
"I believe it's still on the roof."
"Good, because I want to analyze it."
