Chapter 5:
A ghoulish Lovesung
Maya quickly dialed her manager as Mia hugged her tightly.
"Oi Maya, why are you calling on air-"
"IT'S AN EMERGENCY! THERE'S A REAL GHOST!"
"Ugh, ghosts aren't real-"
"One of the ghost hunters is dead! One's missing, and Big Guy's still out there with the ghost, and we don't have the keys to the van!"
The manager let out a sigh and put his hand on his head. "There are no ghosts, but there sure as hell are crazed psychopathic murderers. I'll call the police. Where are you and Mia?"
"On the van with Professor Nakiri."
"Got it, stay put then."
As soon as the call ended, the manager let out another heavy sigh. "This is why I told them it was a bad idea. Haunted spots aren't haunted by ghosts, but by crazed psychopaths trying to pass off as them.
The Lovesung sister's manager, known as Sick-O, was one of the biggest record producers in the country. He had been the group's manager for about 14 months now and it was by far the best decision of his life. The Lovesung sisters were blowing up, thanks to Mia's songs and Maya's vocals. Some even believed they'd become the new queens of pop. While many praised them, there were also many who despised their rise to fame.
Some of them were fellow musicians, jealous of their success, while others were those that had bullied Mia in the past and couldn't stand to see her succeed. One notable person that despised the group was musician Oswald Dennis Osbourne, who had also bullied Mia back in their grade school days.
Since Oswald had considerable influence in both the music industry and government, Sick-O feared he might have caught wind of The Lovesung sister's Halloween broadcast plans and planned to have them murdered at the farm.
The Lovesung sisters had actually been attacked once by a crazed man at a concert, who had smuggled a gun in and nearly succeeded in killing Mia, had Maya not thrown herself on top of her, and as a result, getting hit in the shoulder.
The man was promptly arrested, but the real kicker was the fact that he was actually one of the security guards for the event, and reportedly had ties to Oswald. Both Oswald and the man naturally denied any connection to each other, and a few days later, the man allegedly committed suicide in prison.
"Osbourne, damn you. I'm not gonna let you take these girls away from me, dammit!" Sick-O scowled as he began heading out.
...
Back at the farm, Shana smiled as she watched Maya and Mia pacing around. "So throwing in the towel then" A shame, as I said before, Kale is quite durable."
"Maybe she's got tough skin, but she's still human," Maya sighed as she touched a scar on her shoulder.
"Hmm? where'd that come from?"
"Oh, it's a wound I got from protecting Mia. We were on stage performing when the security guard of all people suddenly stormed on stage and fired at her. I managed to throw myself on her in time, but got hit in the process."
Mia began staring somberly at the floor as Maya continued. "It can still function, but not as well as before. I often disguise the wound with makeup, but even when I do, my sweat causes it to smear off. Not like I mind, but Mia always feels guilty whenever she sees it.
Mia opened her mouth to try and say her piece, but all that came out was a meek squeak.
"So it seems she feels guilty about giving you a permanent injury then?" Shana asked.
"Yeah, but it doesn't really affect us much. I'm the voice, she's the one good with her hands."
"Because she writes the music and disk jockeys?"
"Pretty much. Guess that's why you're the professor."
Shana nodded and decided to inquire about another topic she was curious about; how the twins understood each other if Mia couldn't speak. Maya revealed that she could actually read Mia's thoughts perfectly, which she attributed to the fact that they were twins.
"My reads on her are usually 90% right, but in the times I'm wrong, she's got a notepad on her she'll whip out to convey what she's thinking."
"Hmm, is that why you put your heart out into singing?"
"Yeah, her music is her message to the world, and since she can't say it herself, I'll happily do it for her. That's why I could care less about my arm. All I need is my voice."
Shana couldn't help but give Maya a round of applause for her inspiring line.
"Come to think of it, the bio on your webpage said you used to be quite the adventurer before your injury. Hmm, I just remembered, it said you've been together with your students for about 3 months now. I guess perhaps there's a chance you know them better than we do, which is why you're so confident they aren't dead," Maya smiled.
Even Mia managed a smile as Shana began to chuckle. "Yes, you see we simply saw Kale get impaled, yet did her heart truly get pierced?"
"But her body went limp."
"Playing possum. Relax, these two are trained professionals. They won't falter."
