Giuseppe Homura's life is about as bland as boiled steak. He lives in a small apartment, works an exhausting, corporate job, and enjoys the occasional night at the bar on the company's dime like everybody else.
The only thing that sets him apart from most people is that his father is rotting in prison for the murder of his mother. Giuseppe has tried for years to forgive his father for his terrible crime, to no avail.
On a walk to take his mind off his frustrations, Giuseppe happens upon a beautiful, abandoned church. It's there that he meets a brash, teenaged girl named Anzu. As it turns out, Anzu also has something that sets her apart from everyone else; she's dead.
Anzu's only wish is to pass on from this world, and she believes remembering how she died and what her life was like might help her do that. Giuseppe befriends Anzu and helps her learn all she can, but he might just end up learning a lot about life from the girl who has already died.
