The story takes place in Runa, a sacred land and a kingdom in decline due to constant war with the inhabitants of the forest and beyond.

It is told from the different perspectives of the inhabitants and defenders, as well as the enemies, and ultimately through memories of the past.

The struggle for power among the three factions will lead to the spread of the Faith, an increase in military authority, and constant changes in the government.

Intrigues originating from outside the kingdom threaten to destabilize what little order remains and bring about new problems that could lead to its eventual downfall or annexation.
