I am not Dutch... But the expression means you lose your attention for something that is not near.
For a relationship to work you gotta do things together. Otherwise, you will just grow apart and evolve separately.
Not that you can't do anything separately. But the trope that you see in manga where two people choose to be apart to go to different schools in college, to meet up a couple of years later again as adults is very unromantic in my eyes... It ruins the complete story when they use it.
I guess both expressions can be true depending on the situation
