i'll answer each of your critiques one by one:
1- Mentor's death: yes. the reason for the death of jin's mentor isn't to make the readers emotional but to show more of Jin's life. Jin's mentor was everything to him. In the following chapters, you will get more and more interested in this mentor through Jin. For the not real comment, you said about his death, i guess i might spoil you a bit. Jin didn't grew up like everyone. He never thought of death. That's just his nature. A pure soul.
2- yes the bandits are there solely to make Jin and the group interact. As well as to show the power system on the story i'm writing. Magic is everywhere and not just our poor main character thought of lol.
3- as for the past and present switch: I'm still a novice writer hahaha my bad if sometimes i switch things. I just write and keep moving forward ( Eren style lol) I hope that won't bother any other readers. I'll try to get better.
