Thank you for reading and for your thoughts, I really appreciate it! Yes, I very rarely get a chance to lean into prose while writing novels. I think one shots and short stories are excellent venues for exercising it. :)
I won't answer too much of your speculation, because for stories like this, they work best when it's up to your imagination, but to answer a few items, yes, things were meant to be funny and not-so-serious. As for the use of "child", I'll admit I should probably give the usage a bit more edits. It carried over from something else I was writing and I mostly used it to keep the protagonist's gender ambiguous.
