This doesn't feel like a conclusion to me. We still need to resolve the tension between Zaurgan and Morenna before the story can be called complete. Not necessarily by Z's death -- maybe he just goes into exile or something, so that he can be a persistent antagonist. But it's not over yet.

Actually, I'm going with "Jevenna transferred her memories into baby Morenna" instead of a time loop. Morenna remembers what her mom foresaw, which included the assassination of Tamara, the languages, the fighting techniques, etc. That's my final guess.

Possibly, but one of the rules seems to be that you can't affect part of a body, only the whole body. An unborn baby that's still attached by the umbilical cord probably counts as part of the mother's body until the cord is cut, so she wouldn't be able to just magic the baby out.

It's possible that Zaurgan chose to eliminate Morenna's mother during childbirth, which would look like a tragic but not uncommon accident. There's no evidence for it yet, but it would fit his apparent goals of eliminating all other "shadow mages".

I'm leaning toward the theory that *all* the types of magic are connected, and there's really just one type. It's mental limitations that restrict the caster, not lack of access to a particular "type" of magic.

Why would he TELL everyone he's betraying them, before the actual betrayal? Most of his siblings could end him right there while he's gloating -- Morenna via shadowy backstab, Uthien by blunt force projectile to the head, Ophia by fire or ice, and the Life mages other than Espa by self-buffing and then direct physical attack.

Why does he have confidence that none of the siblings will immediately kill him?

We know Khellvain is a "prodigy" who has two magical talents (from the POV of everyone who doesn't know heretical magic theory), but we don't know what either of those talents is yet. I wonder if he's a Life mage. Half his children are Life mages, so it might make sense, if that's genetic. Maybe part of his magical talent is some sort of emotional or mental alteration. Could that explain why people are so willing to go along with him? Dark stuff.

I think claiming has a "goal", especially a goal with multiple parts, is giving him too much credit. Unless he's playing dumb, it seems like what he wants is for his children to be raised the way he was. The traditional way, which apparently involves a lot of violence.
