everyone HAS to compete in the trial its not an option. The march is only for those who succeed so those who fail down show up and those who do varies amongst the years. The success rate increases as they go. I don't recall if i had the commoners in the march but they are the biggest number of those who succeed.
Only the monastery rejects those after they fail the warrior exam. They still have to do the commoner exam but they have to do it on their own (aka get there themseleves) but its not too hard since the commoner trial is just choosing a profession and being an apprentice for them or doing a task that proves to the person they are interning under that they are worth the time or have potential which can be done in any city as long as their instructor/the person in charge reports about it to the lords of the city and they register before hand too. If they are found to have not taken all the trials they'd be considered to have broken a core law.
