Chapter 7:

My Brother's Girlfriend Tried to Kill Us

TV Head

November 30th, 2014

Dear Diary,

Soooooo, I'm in the hospital. Again.

Where should I start?

Screw it, I'll just tell you about the Macy’s Parade.

So, the Macy’s Parade was on the 27th, and Phil got invited because—obviously. However, he refused to be in the parade. Something about being tired of being a "show pony."

Phil only agreed to show up if there were fireworks, so in an effort to not tell their sponsors that he’d be missing, they moved it to night.

Anyway, Duncan said that he and his team would be watching from afar.

Phil and Kar have gotten very close.

Oh yeah, by the way, we found out her name is Kar. They spend almost every day together. She’s been teaching him sign language, and somehow, she knows every sign language there is. She must have traveled a lot.

They spend every day together, and then, at 9 PM sharp, she leaves to go... somewhere. Then she meets Phil at school the next day.

At some point, even I thought she was weird because she clearly didn’t go to our school. She would just hang out around the school grounds, and whenever security or someone tried to kick her out, she would run away, and they could never catch her. It was like she disappeared into thin air.

Then, five minutes later, she’d be walking into my classroom with a confused look on her face, see me and Moon, and come sit by us, quietly watching.

Moon suggested that we find out where she goes every night, so one time after she left, we tried to follow her.

Staying in the shadows, we followed her to the end of the block. Then she stopped.

She turned and looked in our direction.

We were hiding behind a house, so I wasn’t sure if she saw us...

But then she lifted her head to the sky, SNIFFED THE AIR, and sprinted into an alley.

When we raced after her—there was no one there!

I'm getting off track. The parade.

It was me, my family, Kar, Moon, and Duncan... from somewhere. I asked Phil if he wanted his other friends to come, but he just shrugged. I guess they’re still going through an awkward patch.

So it was me, the fam, Kar, and Moon in our own private area on the side. The parade people waved to Phil, and he would wave back. Kar seemed to really like waving. She waved to literally everyone with a big smile on her face.

Moon gave me a "Thanksgiving present." I don’t think people do that, but it was a metal necklace of a moon! I loved it so much, I wore it to the parade!

However, the trouble started with the fireworks.

See, when the fireworks went off, Kar freaked out at the sound. But then Phil covered her ears and pointed her head toward the sky, and she calmed down.

With wide eyes and her mouth hanging open, she watched as the colors melted into the sky and disappeared in a flash of beauty.

Then one of the fireworks hit a balloon, and it caught fire right in front of us!

The top of it popped, and it came hurtling down on everyone!

The shock of the pop was so loud, my heart dropped into my stomach.

As it deflated and people scattered everywhere, we were stuck!

There was nowhere to go but under the falling balloon.

I wished I could do something.

Anything.

I was scared.

Then I felt something hot in my chest.

The feeling moved to my head.

It spoke to me:

Reach out. I reached out my hand and grabbed at the air.

Suddenly, a black remote with a big red button appeared in my hand. The memories of that day came flooding back into my head.

"Phil!" I screamed.

Suddenly, Phil teleported in front of me.

It was like my instincts kicked in.

I knew what to do.

I pointed the remote at the falling balloon and pressed the button.

"On!" I said.

A powerful laser shot out of his TV screen and evaporated the balloon into dust!

Everyone froze.

They all just stared at us in disbelief. I shook my head and snapped out of my trance. I looked at the weird remote in my hand.

Did I really just do that? I thought.

Before I had any time to process what had happened (aka saving the day, I know, I’m awesome), we heard people screaming again.

But this time, they weren’t running in all directions.

They were all running in one direction—away from Kar.

She was staring at us, her face full of rage.

It looked like heat was rising off of her.

My brother’s screen made a question mark. I shrugged at him. How was I supposed to know what was happening? Then Kar’s mouth split open, twice as wide, and her teeth became sharp.

We both knew we were in for a shock.

Phil pushed me to run.

But after what I’d seen, nothing could surprise me anymore.

Besides, my brother was basically invincible. Or so I thought!

She suddenly grew two more arms and a giant tail that looked like a black and blue hand.

Her two eyes split into four, and then a fifth one grew right in the center of her forehead. They turned black with bright blue rings.

Phil and I looked at each other.

His screen made a question mark again.

Then she attacked.

She punched him with that giant hand-tail of hers.

This was the beast.

Even though it explained a lot, I would have thought she’d look more... I don’t know, beast-like.

The fight was a blur.

They moved so fast, all over the place. She was faster than him.

Phil blocked most of her attacks but wasn’t landing any of his own.

Then she knocked him into me, and we went flying into a car.

Phil cushioned my fall, but it still hurt!

She grabbed him with her tail hand and threw him into the air. Then she jumped and started punching him midair. Phil was barely fighting back. Even if she was this beast thing, I don’t think he wanted to hurt her.

They crashed into buildings, threw cars, and swung lamp posts at each other.

Superhero movies do not show just how much public damage happens. But Kar was my friend. And I still couldn’t see Mom, Dad, or Moon. I just wished they would stop fighting.

Then I remembered the fireworks.

If the sound hurt her, maybe we could use that.

But how?

Then I felt that heat in my chest again.

My remote began to glow.

There were two buttons now.

I pointed it at Phil and my instincts took over again! I pressed the second button.

"Surround Sound." I said.

BOOM!

His TV made a deafening shockwave of sound. It was so strong, it disrupted electronics in the area.

Kar collapsed in pain, covering her ears.

Phil went to help her out of concern, but she bit him!

I pressed the button again.

"Surround Sound!"

She fell again.

Phil grabbed a lamp post and stabbed it through her tail hand, pinning her to the ground.

She screamed and lunged at him, but he stepped back, just out of reach.

Finally, she was stuck.

But something was wrong!

I felt so bad for her though. She didn't seem like herself. Like something clicked in Kar that made her like this. I figured if she was just an animal, it’s not her fault it attacked us. So, did what any reasonable person would do with a humanoid alien beast.

I feed it food till it stopped trying to bite me and let me just pet her on the head. Then when she seemed calm enough, and turned off her “alien beast” mode, Phil took out the lamp post from its tail, patched up her wound the best he could.

Her tail sucked back into her body and her face turned normal again. When she calmed down, she seemed to barley remember what happened. However, looking at the damage she knew.

People were super mad at her, finally coming back to the scene after me and Phil did all the hard work. Phil picked her and me up and jumped high on top of a building. We just kept going till we were out of sight. Kar was crying the whole time.

I don't think she meant to hurt us. But if that's so, then who does want to hurt us? And where was Duncan? In fact, I still haven't seen him!

My head started throbbing and then I passed out and woke up here in the hospital. AGAIN!

If I'm going to be a hero like my brother, I've got to toughen up! He needs me! Who knows what would've happened if I wasn't there to activate his powers!

Until next time,

Ava
