Chapter 6:

The Blue Haired Girl

TV Head

September 18,

Dear Diary,

So me and Phil have been waiting for this beast to arrive.

In the meantime, I took up martial arts, and Phil tested his abilities.

He was like some sort of Superman! He lifted cars, punched through steel beams!

He says I can use some remote somehow, but I haven’t been able to. I just don’t remember what happened.

Duncan showed me a video, though!

Let’s just say that we made several physicists quit their jobs.

Phil got way more attention than usual and even made a deal to cameo in a superhero movie next year!

But it seemed like this supposed “beast” would never come.

That’s when I met the mute girl.

It was the first of September, and we all went to the beach. That was Labor day.

While everyone was enjoying themselves, I went out for a surf! (FYI, I had just started, so I was terrible.)

There were other people out there surfing with me, but on this really big wave, I slipped, and my board launched itself at another surfer—a girl with blue hair and black highlights—and knocked her unconscious.

Luckily, the lifeguard saved her, and I felt really bad!

When I tried to ask her name after she woke up, she just did some motions with her hands. Someone who spoke sign language said that she was mute.

I felt awful!

I got her some new clothes and invited her to my house for our barbecue.

Just looking at this girl in her short jean shorts and basic flannel shirt, you wouldn’t be able to tell she was such an odd character.

But at the party, she wore a name tag that was blank for some reason.

When I asked her about her name, she ignored me and got really overexcited about the meat at the buffet table.

Like, really excited.

Like, we had to go buy more food excited.

She played really rough with some of the dogs at the party, sometimes even wrestling on the ground with them.

She was also very sensitive to some of the bright lights around the area.

She stared at the sparklers the kids held, and she almost touched the bug zapper before I stopped her.

My brother pulled me aside.

He pointed to her and made a question mark on his screen.

“She’s just different,” I said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m sure you’re at least a little familiar with how it feels to be different?”

He made a sad face, looked down, and rubbed his head.

“If you really feel bad, you should try getting to know her.”

He made a smiley face and walked over to her.

Then I saw the most awkward, forced conversation of my entire life.

I mean, it was so bad.

Neither of them could talk, and Phil didn’t know sign language.

Phil had to type out everything on his screen or show images, and she kept doing stuff with her hands.

But as the night went on, I saw them less and less, and whenever I saw one, the other was nearby.

I could have sworn she had a crush on him!

It kinda made me a little upset.

Until that party, me and my brother were inseparable, but now he’s off somewhere, and I’m by myself.

He seems happy, though, so that’s something.

Till next time,
Ava
