Chapter 3:

I will not go down without a fight

Goddess Akra wants a promotion

"Shiiiiit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!"

I was bolting. Full speed ahead. Tearing down the street with at least seven trucks chasing after me. The piece of crap goddess had tricked MEEEEEE!

I should have known she wasn't going to let me off the hook that easy. I should have known she was lying out of her ass when she said the curse was lifted, and I would no longer be isekai'd. But now I was going to die because I was a gullible idiot. Now I was going to die because I was a dumb fuck who believed the words of someone who openly threatened my life several minutes prior. What the hell was wrong with me?

...

The moment I lifted my head from my phone and saw the multiple trucks barreling towards me, I, of course, lost it.

I took off running in the opposite direction, screaming at the top of my lungs. My heart was pounding, my arms and legs were pumping like crazy, propelling my body forward. It was not until the trucks were drawing closer that I realized how idiotic my current strategy was, and just as I was about to be flattened, I dove into a corner, sensing the sudden gust of wind as each truck wooshed by me as they sped past.

Voop, voop.

Voop voop voop.

Voop voop.

...

I was now in an alleyway, seated on the floor, with my back pressed up against the wall as I struggled to catch my breath. My chest rising and falling with every attempt. Luckily, the trucks couldn't follow me into corners, but I couldn't stay there forever. However, was this really my life now?

I had barely finished the thought when I received an incoming call—fortunately from my real phone this time. I took it out of my pocket and answered it.

"Dude, where are you, man?" came the familiar voice of my friend from the office.

"Oh, Kenji, thank God," I hastily said into the phone in relief. "You absolutely won't believe the morning I had. Well, technically the morning I'm still having. But listen to this. A goddess is trying to—"

"Yeah yeah yeah, I'm sure it's important, but dude. Asami has been looking for you."

I suddenly sprang up at the mention of her name, my eyes widening with curiosity, my worries melting away into nothingness.

"Ahh, who did you say was looking for me again?" I asked, clearing my throat and pretending as if I did not hear the first time. In reality, my excitement was through the roof.

"Asami, dude," Kenji replied. "She's been looking for you all morning. This is the third time she has come over from accounting to ask me about you. Apparently, you guys didn't exchange numbers yesterday, so she can't just call you directly to know when you're coming to the office."

There was no way. There was no way she was that concerned about me. Kenji had to be pulling a fast one.

"And don't you dare think for a second I'm joking about this, dude," Kenji said. "I swear to God, I am currently looking at her right now as she goes back to accounting."

"Hey! Don't stare as she walks away, man!" I shouted.

"Ooh, sorry about that," Kenji laughed. "But seriously, dude, you gotta hurry. Also, I saw her holding a little box, and my guess is she may have gotten something for you."

"You mean like a cake or something?" I asked.

"Probably," Kenji replied. "Look, all I know for sure is, you need to get your lame ass over here like right now. And if I were you, I'd also get the lady a little something. I mean, you guys are having lunch later, right?"

"Mhm!" I squealed in answer. I was too excited to form words.

"Perfect!" Kenji exclaimed. "Go get her something, and get your ass over here, now."

"But Kenji, I—"

He hung up the phone before I could get another word in. And honestly, it may have been for the best. I suddenly remembered the predicament I was currently in, and I wanted to tell him. But how was I supposed to do that without sounding like an absolute lunatic?

...

I poked my head out of the corner to see if I was in the clear. Other than the occasional cars moving up and down every few seconds, the road was empty. There was no sign of the trucks.

Despite the sheer insanity that was now my life, I still needed to get to the office and meet up with Asami. I don't know why this goddess was hell-bent on dragging me to the afterlife—I guess it was mostly for her own benefit or something—but I will be damned if I wasn't going to fight for my survival to the very end. Now, I needed to get to the office, but before that, I took out my phone and searched for the nearest bakery. I had to go get a little something for the lady, Asami.

"Here goes nothing."

...

To be concluded.
