Beyond The Stars

Chapter 643: Simon’s Story — An Angel That Struggled To Gain Respect

Narrator: Back with Kurt and Kasuma in the battle against Simon.

Simon flies high up to one of the highest parts of the room. He looks down and sees Kurt flying up after him. Kurt’s eyes are still closed and he is in his Aura King mode.

Simon thinks to himself. (“Damn it! He really can detect me!”)

Simon prepares to attack but Kurt is too fast and punches Simon in the gut with a Flame Aura Punch. Kurt then puts his hands together and slams them down on Simon, knocking him downward. Simon regains his stability while still falling and starts flying around the room. However, Kurt has no trouble keeping up.

Simon thinks to himself. (“I’m not used to this style of fighting! I’m going to have use everything I can think of!”)

Kurt shouts, “Aura Drill!!”

Kurt forms aura around his arm in the shape of a drill and thrusts his arm forward. It starts drilling into Simon’s body, doing a lot of damage. Kurt finishes his attack by kicking Simon back down to the floor.

As Kurt flies downward, he screams, “Cancel the silence!! I want to talk!!”

Simon grits his teeth in confusion and then says, “He wants to talk? Why?”

Simon closes his eyes and then opens them a second later. He says, “Fine. What is it?”

Kurt lands on the ground and states, “Earlier, Kasuma said that you were the one most likely to question Daren’s ways. So, why aren’t you doing that?”

Simon starts to look down at the floor as if internally reflecting on himself.

Simon mumbles, “Okay then…”

Narrator: About 8,000 years ago in Flora World.

A young preteen boy lies dead in a flower field. The young boy has short hair and wears glasses. His body is covered in blood. Two adult male humans stand overlooking his body. The adults appear to be soldiers as they wield assault rifles. One of them gets down on one knee and puts his hand on the boy’s body.

The soldier says, “Poor kid. He never stood a chance. Just a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The other soldier remarks, “War is cruel. It doesn’t spare the innocent.”

The first soldier stands up while still looking at the boy. He says, “Our world is so beautiful, yet it is plagued by constant wars.”

The second soldier puts his hand on the first soldier’s shoulder. The second soldier says, “Come. We better get going. We can tend to the dead after we have confirmed the defeat of the enemy in this battle.”

***

Narrator: Soon after, in the paradise of Flora World’s Heaven.

The boy stands and looks out to the people enjoying paradise. Someone comes up from behind him and that person is Light God Daren.

Daren speaks with a serious tone. “Boy.”

The boy is alerted and turns around to face Daren.

The boy nervously replies, “Y- Yes?”

Daren continues speaking. “According to our God of Death, you have a very high morality rating. I have an offer to make you.”

The boy replies with curiosity. “An offer?”

Daren responds, “Yes. I can reincarnate you as an angel.”

The boy replies, “Why would you do that? What does that do for you?”

Daren pauses for a moment before responding, “You died because you were in the middle of a battlefield between two warring human factions. I have learned that you hate war. If you want to stop wars, you must train and be ready to fight.”

The boy scratches his head and says, “To fight in a war? That doesn’t make any sense.”

Daren responds, “There is more to it. You see, we in Heaven have been fighting the forces of Hell for a very long time. If we can finally defeat Hell, I will begin to rule over the human population. War is inevitable, but if I directly rule the humans, the number of wars will significantly drop. Now, I ask if you will accept my offer. You can make a difference.”

The boy pauses for a moment before he replies. “…I will do it. If I can make a difference, I accept your offer.”

Daren holds out his arm and says, “Welcome, Simon. I will now reincarnate you.”

***

Narrator: In Flora World’s Heaven, following Simon’s reincarnation.

The young Simon is now a winged angel. He looks down the floor in the room that he stands in as a few angels look at him.

A male angel asks with curiosity, “Who is this new kid?”

A female angel replies, “Our newest mortal reincarnated as an angel.”

The male angel responds, “But can he help us defeat Hell? He’s young and looks weak.”

Wally walks into the room and chimes in, “Give the newcomer a chance. Hehehe. He will be put on the front lines and if he can’t cut it, well, he will perish, again. Hehehe.”

Simon begins shaking as he turns around to walk away from the other angels.

Wally playfully remarks, “Don’t take it personally, kid. War is tough and if you don’t become strong, then you will die the first time that you enter the battlefield.”

Simon leaves the room and continues walking while looking down at the floor until he bumps into Grant, causing him to stumble back a bit in panic. He looks up to see Grant who looks down at him with his usual serious expression.

Simon speaks in panic. “O- Oh! S- Sorry! I didn’t mean to…!”

Grant softly says, “Come with me. I want to talk.”

Simon nods nervously.

***

Narrator: Soon after that.

Simon and Grant are standing on a balcony overlooking an outdoor part of Heaven.

Grant begins to speak. “My father told me about you. You hate war and wish there was no war. Tell me, what do you see war as?”

Simon pauses for a moment before responding. “I see it as… pure evil. Something that has no point.”

Grant looks at Simon before looking out at the angels going about their day at ground level. He begins to reply, “Since you are a child, I can’t blame you for looking at it like that. But the truth is, war is not simply bad people doing bad things to each other. It’s bad people trying to do bad things and then good people retaliate to stop the bad people. Those of us in Heaven do not fight Hell because we are bad people. We fight them because we want to stop them from doing bad things. We are the good that is trying to stop the bad.”

Simon looks at Grant with a bit of awe. He asks, “Is that true?”

Grant responds, “Yes. We want to defeat Hell to achieve peace. That is why you must train and become strong to help us achieve that goal. You will be fighting for peace. I hope these words help. My father doesn’t have the greatest way with words.”

***

Narrator: One day later.

Simon is in a training room with Lilly. The room is laid out like a town in ruins to simulate a battlefield. Simon runs toward Lilly and starts trying to punch her. His punches are slow so Lilly has no trouble dodging them.

Lilly verbally critiques him. “Come on, you can do better than that!”

Simon becomes more nervous as he tries to kick Lilly. She grabs his foot during his kick. She then pushes him back and he falls back on the floor. Lilly puts her hands on her hips with a questioning expression on her face.

She asks, “Don’t you have any magic abilities? I know you are still a kid but you have to be capable of more than this.”

Simon begins avoiding eye contact as he nervously responds, “Sorry, but I don’t know.”

Lilly puts one of her hands up to her chin as she responds, “Magic among mortals has been becoming more common in recent years. You may have had something even during your time as a mortal, and even if you didn’t, you definitely have something now that you are an angel. We just have to figure out what it is. Don’t worry. We’ll get there.”

***

Narrator: One year later.

Simon has grown more and is now a teenager. He and Lilly are in the training room again and this time, Simon is now flying around and tries diving down to attack Lilly. He appears to have a little more confidence than he did a year earlier.

Lilly shouts with excitement, “Come on! Show me what you can do!”

Simon dives down close and tries to swipe Lilly with his arm. However, she easily jumps out of the way.

Lilly grins and speaks in a teasing way. “You know, I’m not going to just dodge your attacks now. I will also use my attacks on you!”

Lilly jumps toward Simon and lightly kicks him, knocking him against the wall of a ruined building.

Lilly states with a grin, “And that’s not all.”

Plants begin growing out from the wall and restrain Simon. Lilly begins slowly walking toward Simon with her hands clenched. She begins speaking with a serious tone. “Simon, it has been a year and we still don’t know what your magic is. I think putting you in danger will allow you to tap into your magic at an instinctual level. Unleash your magic or you might die here.”

Now, Simon has regressed to his nervous and scared self. He grits his teeth in fear and struggles to break free from the plants.

Lilly states, “You better do something.”

Simon continues to struggle, and as he does, magic begins to charge through his body. He begins to vanish from Lilly’s sight. She stops walking and opens her eyes wider. She asks, “Wait, where did he go? He just vanished.”

Simon appears perplexed as he states, “What? I’m still right here.”

The plants restraining Simon loosen so he stands up. He notes, “She didn’t hear what I said?”

As Simon calms down, his magic begins to stop and he starts to appear in Lilly’s sight again. She opens her eyes wide and says, “I can see you again but now you’re free from my plants… So, your magic is invisibility?”

Simon fumbles his words as he responds, “I- um- maybe?”

Lilly looks disappointingly at Simon as she says, “That might help you hide from the enemy but I can’t really see that helping you actually defeat them.”

Hearing Lilly’s words causes Simon to look down at the ground with disappointment himself.

***

Narrator: In the near future after that, another battle between the forces of Heaven and Hell broke out.

Simon is on the battlefield and is grouped with a squad of other angels. They are in an area with a lot of knocked-over trees and other plant life. Simon shakes as he walks. A male angel that appears to be the head of the squad looks back at Simon.

The male angel says, “Come on, Simon. Your fear will attract all sorts of demons. You are putting a target on yourself.”

Simon starts avoiding eye contact as he responds, “Sorry…”

As they continue walking, a goblin demon jumps out and tries to slash Simon. The surprise attack causes Simon to fall back to the ground in fear. Before the demon can land his attack, the squad leader angel slashes the demon with his sword, killing him.

The squad leader looks at Simon and says, “This is exactly what I was talking about. At this rate, you will never gain the respect of any other angel. There will be a time when no one is there to save you if you get attacked. You must be able to fight.”

Simon mumbles, “I- I know…”

The squad leader looks ahead again. “Come on, let’s get going.”

***

Narrator: Later that day.

They are now in an open field and most of the angel squad now lies either wounded or dead on the ground. A male humanoid dog demon grabs ahold of the squad leader angel by his neck, causing him to drop his sword. Simon is not wounded but he is paralyzed with fear. The demon grins as he chokes the squad leader.

The demon says with an amused voice, “You’re tough but I have fought angels that are way stronger than you. You’re going to become food for my hounds.”

The demon notices Simon and laughs. “Gurherher! Ah! It looks like I missed one! I will be with you in a minute.”

Simon thinks to himself in panic. (“That demon is going to kill him and then the rest of us! What do I do!? What should I do!!? Should I run!?”)

The squad leader’s words from earlier appear in his head. (“At this rate, you will never gain the respect of any other angel. There will be a time when no one is there to save you if you get attacked. You must be able to fight.”)

Then, Grant’s words from over a year earlier appear in his head. (“War is not simply bad people doing bad things to each other. It’s bad people trying to do bad things and then good people retaliate to stop the bad people. Those of us in Heaven do not fight Hell because we are bad people. We fight them because we want to stop them from doing bad things. We are the good that is trying to stop the bad.”)

Suddenly, Simon’s magic begins to activate. He slowly begins to stand up with a mix of fear and determination in his eyes. The demon looks back over to where Simon is but doesn’t see him.

The demon wonders aloud, “Huh? Where did that scared angel go? Hmm, he must have run off when I stopped paying attention to him.”

As the demon talks, Simon walks over to the sword that the squad leader dropped and starts to pick it up.

The demon continues to wonder aloud. “Wait, I can’t even hear myself anymore. What’s going on—?”

The demon is interrupted as Simon starts thrusting the sword into the demon’s abdomen. The sword goes all the way through, causing the demon to drop the squad leader and start screaming in pain. Simon completely tackles the demon and starts repeatedly stabbing him in the chest. Simon screams in both fear and determination as he continues to stab the demon. The squad leader coughs as he tries to catch his breath and looks at the demon in shock, trying to figure out what’s happening. “How is that happening!?”

Simon starts yelling during his screaming. “Die! Die!! DIE!!!!”

Soon, the demon does die. Simon stands up while breathing heavily. He stares out at the other demons not too far out in the distance. He starts running toward them with the sword in hand.

He shouts, “I’ll kill you all!!!”

The squad leader looks on in shock as he sees the demons in the distance start dropping dead one by one. He mumbles, “Who? What…?”

Once all of the demons are dead, Simon’s magic begins to end and he appears in the squad leader’s view again.

The squad leader asks in surprise, “Wait, Simon, that was you?”

***

Narrator: In Heaven after the battle was over.

Lilly walks up to Simon. She smiles with happiness as she says, “I heard what you did. That sounds incredible. Your magic actually does have incredible potential. Do you have a name for it?”

Simon rubs his head as he replies, “Uhh, not really.”

Lilly holds up one finger as she states excitedly, “I think I know what you should name it. Call it Assassin Magic! Your enemies will never know you were even there!”

Simon smiles back as he says, “Sure thing. I think it’s pretty good.”

***

Simon narrates the rest of his story as the flashbacks end. “From there, I became even stronger and better utilized my magic. I hated war but fighting finally clicked for me. Over time, I became one of the top angels of Heaven because my magic was just that useful. After about 8,000 more years, we finally defeated Hell. My hope to see the end of wars was starting to become a reality. After the death of the Dark God, most of us moved down here to Earth in this pyramid. Light God Daren became the world’s ruler while still being its god. Wars even among mortals have basically been nonexistent for the past 5 years. The only thing left to take care of was to eliminate the Dark God’s bloodline and the risk of future wars would be gone. Unfortunately, we could not seem to find Ivy. Knowing that you divine beings from a different world teamed up with her, I should have followed where you were going instead of reporting you.”

Kasuma shouts in anger, “Subjugating the mortal population is wrong! The gods are meant to protect them and give them a final resting place when they die! Gods are not meant to be the rulers of mortals!”

Simon replies back in anger, “Stopping them from killing each other in wars is protecting them!”

Simon stands up and charges his magic.

Kurt looks at Simon with a serious expression but smiles for just a moment as he says, “You know… you remind me of myself because I too am a mortal that was reincarnated as an angel. And because of that, I feel it is my duty to show you the error of your thinking.”

Kurt’s expression becomes serious again as he shouts, “Let’s finish this!”

Narrator: Simon’s backstory has been revealed! Now, their battle must continue! Kurt is determined to reform Simon!
