Good start. Good writing, comfortable pacing and unlike some other contest entries I've checked out, I didn't feel the least bit lost at any point during this first chapter.
I'm not an expert on the genre, but I've read a few novels with similar premises. The knowledge of the genre tropes led me to feeling right at home from the start. I only hope that the story will have some original elements to distinguish itself from the other novels I've read... Though I'm not too concerned about clichés and whatnot, it's always nice to see some original thought put into a story.
