Off the top of my head I can think of ideas like, societal collapse, a new form of technology rising to take its place, government conspiracy around the event, an AI that did it purposefully, a story around a group of people trying to purposefully shut off the internet before that date or something would happen.
They may not be the best ideas but there's possobilities
