i think it’s totally fine. I wasn’t confused. I just think stick with he/him if you plan to. otherwise, a small comment in the story would work if you play them to go back fluid. for example “Yuame’s form seemed more feminine now, and Kaoru found himself thinking of them as ‘her’ now.”… something like that, or if you want even a fun conversation between them discussing this could be fun. “So do I refer to you as a he, she, or they?” “I do not care what linguistic preference you use when referring to me, tanuki.”…
I think it’s wholly your preference, just be clarifying in your decisions. great stuff so far!

yep. their entire story has been about impermanence. no matter how much we cherish the blossoms in the spring, they will always fade. I think there’s a tragic beauty to cherishing things that don’t last, but yes this is especially sad.

thank you! I love both stories equally for different reason, and view them as companions, so I’m grateful to have either make it. objectively speaking I do think Songstress is the better novel as a whole, so I’m happy it won. I look forward to you reading it!
and yes I loved the idea of memories and wisdom being currency. if maji can create realities to their whim, basic needs would likely be met. so anything beyond that would simply be for personal development. or… that’s how it started…

there are so many moments through the story where I imagined even just those opening few seconds of A Cold Memory playing. even from the beginning when Hazuki first leaves before every thing falls apart. he looks back and sees her standing alone in the dusk light. that image definitely deserves that song.

also, regarding Can-Mo, I forget if we talked about it, but I wanted the “tentacle monster” character to be basically the opposite of the hentai trope. he doesn’t rip clothes off, he dresses our heroine. he doesn’t violate, he’s gentle and compassionate.
