Um... was he wearing body armor? Kevlar? Magical protection? Anything? Ivan's an expert (or at least experienced) killer correct, wielding a cutlass? Cutting across the center torso with no armor goes way beyond pain tolerance; you're looking at multiple organs sliced open, massive internal hemorrhage, stuff that needs a modern hospital, not something he's going to just "walk it off", unless magic is involved.

Hold on... a few paragraphs up, you stated "alongside the ship, still maintaining some distance so they couldn't board us." So what happened? Lark closed distance to point blank range and the pirates didn't notice him doing so?

I'm kind of shocked that Ivan, given the build up and rep he supposably has isn't presented as being an expert with a cutlass and able to chop Lark into meat much quicker. Unless I've missed something, Lark hasn't had any extensive training in weapon skills, and he hasn't been granted any cheat skills by design. If he's a "normal high school kid" who's never fought in a significant way, he should be cold meat in a few swings against a seasoned pro, unless one of his harem is magically buffing him.

In a more grounded story, it is a serious concern if someone "feels nothing" upon killing another person. During one of my previous fics, I had an innocent char kill someone in a clear case of self-defense, which prompted a significant amount of self-reflection, as all the real-world research I was able to find made it clear that the act of taking a life, even in a clear-cut case of self-defense is something that weighs heavily on ones conscience, assuming we're talking about a healthy psychology. Now in this case, Lark/Kaito might not fall in that category, having suffered years of childhood trauma, leading so something that might be considered broken by modern standards of psychology.

Thank you for your support throughout! The "MHA" quote actually came when I was looking for quotes for unity that the three girls would say together throughout the entire story, at first as something casual (way back in Chp2), then later as something more meaningful as the stakes ramped up (scattered throughout). I originally wanted something from Japanese pop culture, but struck out but this quote from the Three Musketeers popped up, and yes, I'm aware of the tie to MHA.

The final quote above was meant to foreshadow Akiko's final fate and where she ended up when the story concluded.

Itsuki really seems to have gotten the shaft in terms of isekai power ups. Yeah, he gets power, but he ends up paying for it in pain getting slammed around.
