The boulder's base has been worn by wind and rain so that it sits on top of a thin stone pedestal. I can edit the paragraph if you think it would help.
She's trying to summon wind magic to blow the tree over. It would still kill the tree. So it's not the act of killing the tree, it's the act of using death magic to kill the tree. Her fear is after using death magic a couple dozen times on plants, then she would graduate to using it a couple dozen times on animals, then eventually she would kill a human with it because there would be some seemingly justifiable reason and she's then comfortable with death magic. I've simplified it into being 1, 2, 3 for the explanation in the story, even though it would a series of choices over time.
Yes she's trying to use wind magic but the magic fizzles because she is magic locked. She doesn't know she is magic locked. I ended the chapter so that the reader thinks the spell is going to work. The next chapter opens with the spell failing.
No she wouldn't set the witch hunters on fire if she had fire magic. She might consider a wall of fire as defense but probably wouldn't use it out of concern it might cause a forest fire.
The witch hunters consider Clayton as helping her, therefore he is helping a criminal. This will be addressed later on.
Because of the episodic nature of the story, its recommended to end each chapter with a hook to keep the reader engaged. If you are wondering how it plays out, then the ending did its job correctly. If you aren't interested in continuing to read then I'm not doing well as the storyteller. Ideally someone should be so engrossed they read the entire story in just a few sessions.
