Uh, about the travel between Kuro's land and Chersea/Cherwind, Maddie, Ruro and Natasha often use their god-powers to teleport, which Kuro and his group of friends also benefits from. I think I put those somewhere in the latter chapters? Also, they already have the steam train technology, making the non-teleport travels even faster.
By the way, if you haven't seen the map yet, Kuro's fief lie inside the Empire of Chersea, in which the crossing to Cherwind is located. You can check out this story's page in Syosetu to see the map. ^_^
As for the talking trees, Elves have different senses than other mortals (like humans, beastmen, demons and dwarves). In this matter, Elves can 'talk' to their 'trees' thru their feelings, and nope, the ability is lost once the saplings (and even the elves) are taken away from Cherwoods (and stayed for too long, as in the case of the latter, the younger 'Chersean' elvish generation lost their ability to 'talk' to trees).
