Thank you so much!
For the last few days I've been churning over this story in my head, thinking how I could have given it a tighter plot, a stronger hook, more interwoven character threads—generally second guessing myself—and I know I'm not the only writer doing this right now. Hard to write 40k-50k words and emerge the same writer, the person, on the other side. Some aspects of the story could be better, but in other ways it turned out pretty good. Thanks for letting me know that the good bits shine through—being fun was one of this novel's primary goals.
At the moment, I don't think I'll go for the massive rewrite my inner-editor is suggesting. I'll learn more from doing a training arc writing short-stories or continuing, rather than retelling the tale I just told.
I used to hide all my drafts from everyone, because they were imperfect and I didn't know how to fix them. It would be cool, I thought then, to emerge from the shadows with an unimpeachably great first book. I'm sure other writers have wanted that, as I did. Writing one masterwork after another in an unbreaking stride would be one heck of a career—but as a story, it'd be arc-less, flattened by lack of conflict.
Thanks for reading!
