Chapter 6:

I Will Find You

Under The Dome is Woe

Donna's mansion resembled a futuristic castle, similar to the White House in design. Its color was offset by a slightly reflecting blue shine, as if it were covered in scales. Inside the large, circular office, Donna sat behind a desk, giving a frosty glare to a keeper in the center of the room. She had a mug with the ViGen logo on her desk, and Jenny stood beside her at parade rest.

"I mean, there's no way we could have a lead. Not so quickly. All we can tell is that only people with save chips were affected," the keeper said, sweating profusely.

Four men who looked like executives sat on couches on either side of the keeper. On the couch to the keeper's right sat Baxter, a fat man with a comb-over, resembling a bloated seal in an office job.

"It's your section! What if Donna had been near that place? She could have been killed! Or worse..." Baxter said, looking worried.

Next to Baxter was Erik, a small man with a long beard who appeared the most relaxed in the room. "The situation was handled, and they were all put down," he commented.

Jenny spoke up, "There was a raid the other day. We were able to get the location by following someone who broke into one of our facilities the other day. It is said this person might be that same person. Did you not keep a lookout for the description?"

"One of our drones would have picked him up. We believe it started in a club, but the footage from inside was destroyed. We could just go door to door, interrogating the people in the area," the keeper suggested.

Kirk, a tall man on the other couch, interjected, "Do you know how that would make us look, you fool? The board is already considering replacing someone. If people get upset, they might start asking questions about --"

"Silence," Donna commanded, and the room fell dead silent. The men looked at each other, sweating and nervous.

"Leave," Donna ordered, and everyone quickly exited the room, except Jenny.

Donna stood and looked out the window. All around her were white, pristine buildings, with children laughing and playing outside. A woman waved at a vending machine, which sprouted wheels and rolled over to her. Donna looked into the distance, all the way to the horizon, and saw the crowded buildings and their darkish color.

"Money makes men blind," she mused. "They live here in the center with the investors getting fat. They don't pay attention, and shit goes sideways."

Turning to Jenny, she continued, "We never considered that someone would take advantage of the chip, but someone out there was banking on it."

"Someone from the outskirts?" Jenny asked.

"Perhaps. But why party goers? Something is missing. Why not a government office or something that would have an actual impact. This seems... random. Something big is going on, and I need to know what," Donna replied.

"Permission to speak freely?" Jenny requested.

"I suppose," Donna responded.

Jenny explained, "From what we can tell, the attack took advantage of our system and sent people into a frenzy with some kind of frequency."

Donna waved her hand dismissively, "Don't tell me things I already know."

"I'm just saying that whoever is involved in this has high connections, deep on our side. Is there anyone who pops out to you?" Jenny clarified.

Donna gazed out onto her city, narrowing her eyes at the outskirts. "No, but I know who might," she said, "We don't need to go door to door, but it's time we put our thumb on the scale."
