i hope you keep updating this story i find it of the ilk of Life for Sale by Yukio Mishima and Welcome to the NHK. it is very Japanese in concept and narrative style. maybe you have lived there or are familiar with the culture quite a bit. it is slow burn and right now as someone mentioned earlier, the premise and concept are carrying the story. Which seems to be the point. Kohei isn't a very interesting character on purpose, and the dullness of which he lives reflects who he is.
Underneath it all, i do enjoy the poignant emotionality that wants to come out, but can't at the moment. i hope to keep reading this
