I just love strange new magic systems, and this hits that spot.

Anxsel: exists. Haku: woah, he's cool. Pan: this guy's CRINGE.

It's an old magic that imposes a lot of restrictions. Silvester (the magic researcher mentioned this chapter) has a strong understanding of (and opinions on) this type of magic, but Brochwel and Tecca need to rescue him first.

a curse really is no joke in this setting.

rare to see corruption (bribery and the like) at the adventurer's guild in a fantasy story. Feels grounded, and it shows Fiona's not the only force keeping Takumi in bonds.

p.s.: maybe it was just my story-radar doing a false positive, but something about Gregor's trade offer felt off. Maybe it was genuine but his past gambling on Takumi signing the contract made me suspicious of him here.

Yes! Time to see a creepy valley! I can't wait to see what horrors (psychological, monstrous, or otherwise) lie within

That was the intended effect for this chapter. I'll reveal the reason for that uncertainty soon (trying to stick the landing on the reveal-moment and the logic behind the reason in the draft presently)

Love the fact that Haku says something very wise about heroes needing a strong connection with common people to act heroically, then tries the least subtle, most honest approach to gaining entrance to an institution they've already been told is performing a coverup. Wise, but definitely doesn't have it all figured out.

It means that despite all those lives, Haku still has something to learn from Pan.

seems the "price" mentioned in the chapter title seems more internal to the main character (his skill found out, coughing up ... mist?) rather than losing someone he cared about. Nicely done.

I haven't gone as far as drawing a map and determining exact distances, but I very much enjoy the grounded logistical thinking. (I have a mental map, but it's vague and just to try and keep directions consistent). Maybe I could bodge the map together for real at some point...

That road through the storm isn't just set dressing, but first: Aoda
