the protagonist is very good at reading people while those other peoples' attention slides off him. I always find that trait cool in characters when it's portrayed well (as it is here)

Tecca has some of the "rogue archetype" vibes to her, I think mainly due to the secrecy and deception. When I decided how the schools of magic worked (and were created), it pushed me away from replicating the familiar "classes" seen in D&D and many other RPGs. I might get into why she's a mage at some point, but in this setting the way a person fights is more of a function of what they've had the opportunity to learn.

I'm glad you enjoyed the atmosphere and those details, they were fun to write.

(This chapter's first draft came out kinda mechanical, injecting those details and giving the two in the tailor's more zing were my attempt to save it from being a bland chapter. Sounds like it worked)

As a stationery enthusiast, this chapter was candy for me. So much familiar, and so much I haven't dabbled with yet but know is out there. (Steel nib dip pens and fountain pens are still made and are really fun to use. Haven't tried iron gall ink or quills yet).

The guild bureaucracy seems ... sorta sensible so far? Emphasis on 'sorta': The 'additional evidence before investigating' requirement might come back to bite them, but insisting on at least a 4-member team to investigate a possible monster nest makes sense: you would want enough people to be able to deal with multiple threats at once and to watch each other's back if they're walking into a hive of monsters, even weak ones.
