Thanks for your notes! I think most people would've expected someone to die in the volcano battle because it is such a large ending set piece, but I thought that would be predictable. Plus, if either of them died during that, it would've been fitting. However, I wanted the world to feel unfair. Like the reader feels like I wrote the wrong ending. He's supposed to defeat the boss, get the girl (or she goes out heroically) and save the day. That makes it all the more painful when he actually does earn a happy ending and it's ripped from him. If he would've failed, fine, but it being taken away feels worse. In the sequel, I wanted him to have a good reason for him distancing the ones he cares about from him. If he knew they could die by being next to him, he'd rather be alone. That being said, I do think I'll have to find a more digestible way to do this.

Ya got me, it is sequel bait. Not even my first choice as an ending actually. At first, I wanted her to be kidnaped or something, but that didn't really work. Then I wanted him to have a happy ending and then something terrible happen in the beginning of the next book. All of the other options felt cheap or predictable. Also, John has to suffer. The tone that I'm going for is that being a spy, while action packed, is actually not fun at all. It's a horrible, terrible, thank-less job that is often unfair. John is also a guy who has attacked and killed a lot of important people, in this book alone after leaving his mafia family, who knows that he's flipped. Like in so many mafia movies, books and tv shows, the ending has some tragic sense of loss. Either of the main character or of someone close, due to their direct actions. It wouldn't have been as shocking if you could see her death coming. I wanted the reader to feel like it was unfair, but not totally absurd. In the end, her accidently taking a bullet meant for him was the best way to do that. I still might change the way this happens, but the result is still the same.

Good instincts! However, I felt like it happened a bit fast here. So in the rewrite, I made it so John confuses her longer with the absurdity and it lowers her guard, allowing him to dart her. As you can tell, when she gets too in her head, she looses control.

Nope! Something I really wanted to do with this series is kinda sievert the "badass always wins" troupe of spy thrillers. I wanted John's journey to feel grueling and tiresome. He saves the day but never wins. Just when he's up, he goes back down. Only by sheer will and skill does he keep going. And this case, a well timed assist.
