The thing about Mira is that she has waited for a long time for someone, especially an older woman, to talk to her in a way that had nothing to do with politics. As she said, she's the only heir. They treat her like glass. Samara just sees a girl as young as her children.

Riktar is one of those people who has the full trust of his boss. He has gotten results over so many years that the king just thinks, okay, I'll see where he goes with this. Nobody knew he was going to hit her, but as soon as Hunter saw it he knew Riktar was trying to provoke a reaction and thought up a better way to get his mother to react. Hunter realized that his mom is not a soldier, so Riktar needs to adapt his tactics.

As for the queen...wait for the next chapter.

I like to think of Violet as absolutely seeing herself like that in her head, but everyone else sees her doing it and is utterly unimpressed. Like, she's the shining, beautiful, mysterious woman, but in reality she's the cackling chibi gremlin.

That was actually my first thought when coming up with this story. Not only the fun I could have with a normal wife and mom suddenly becoming the legendary Hero, but what it means for the boy who dreamed of something like that all his life seeing it go to his mom. What do you do when you realize you aren't the main character?

It's a joke. She is just really very tired. She has been up all night, found out she has been chosen to be the next Hero, killed some monsters, watched her son's dream die in front of her because of it and still somehow has to function as a mom. She wants to sleep for a very long time before doing anything else.

Exactly. I'm still going to use complex words and try to convey bigger themes. But I had to learn to do it with much smaller real estate. I coukd have gone on for 3000 words describing each character in the family. It's kind of the fun of writing a light novel style book. You have to be complicated and simple at the same time. You have to get something as deep and meaningful as Apothecary Diaries or Ascendance of a Bookworm into 1000 words a chapter.

On the subject of being easy to read:

The first attempt I made at writing a web novel I was cranking out 2000 + word chapters. I had to actively learn how to force myself to stay quiet. It is a surprisingly difficult skill to learn how to do less. I hope the effort is paying off in these chapters.

Thank you! I did want this to start out feeling like the classic hero gets the sword and saves the world from evil story, but then you realize where the story turns away from that mold and what makes it different.

And the traditional fairy tale feel is definitely intentional. I want the family to feel like a normal, good family. They love each other, fight, make up, support each other. They are not the type to save the world. They are what people save the world to protect. So I thought it would be interesting to make someone like that the hero and not the rugged knight. I hope it works out.
