First, I want to say for the record I love that someone is thinking about my story. As a writer this is incredibly rewarding. Now, as for why Zack needs a guardian, technically he could have probably skated on it. But Chistos spent 500 years trying to be a good man, and leaving the two who saved his daughter to fend for themselves is something he wouldn't allow. Besides, he sees why Zack is the way he is. Zack is always trying to fix broken things, situations, people. Chistos wants to be the man who gives him a place where, one day, hopefully he won't have to fix things and he can just exist. I think Chistos sees a lot of the young man he was 500 years ago in Zack, and a lot of his friends as well.
