Wow. That was short and to the point. This epilogue really hit the spot and leaves me with a cold feeling. Death used Edward for his ends while making him think it was the other way around. This will make rereading the story worthwhile. It wasn't unsuspected but seeing everything trough Edward's eyes so far, and the strong statement in the beginning that death was on his side, make the inversion work.

The tension and the mystery really shine in this chapter, IMHO the best call was having Death accompany him and well... Just be there (for now)

Thank you very much for reading. I did think long and hard about the ending as the contest asked for a true ending rather than a volume ending. But it would have felt cheap to pretend that the larger world problems just magically got solved as well in the end (even if Reinhard had died)... So I wrote it how I felt it fit. The main promise was solving the mystery of the mutating mist and providing some sort of resolution there which is what I felt mattered most. Thanks again for your kind words.

That was a fun chapter! I enjoyed Cedric and Maddox fighting then bickering, really shows off their dynamic. They must have been trough a lot together 👀

Also Menmin is a great nickname though I was a little lost if I was supposed to remember that from earlier...

I am bad with remembering names especially since I read many things in parallel and write my own stuff.

I think Damian can learn a lot from Cedric... will he also see him at the academy? For sure I doubt that was the last of him.

You might be able to figure out what happened with Kou-4 if you think about how Kou would react if Katherina would start doing what Kathi-4 did 🤔

You have a true tragic hero. But the comment about mages powers stopping before they hit the ground makes me curious. There might be more to it than meets the eye.

I like the self inflicted tragic heroes... There are others. Some more some less (*cough* mine) but I do love that all the takes on the same prompt are so different.

Wow that was quite the dramatic fight, failed rescue and escape / chase. To think they are child soldiers makes it so much worse. I guess the child soldiers are necessary for the small tunnels? Still harsh.

Yes I understand, when I write my stories sometimes I am torn between the writer who wants the ending to make narrative sense and the reader who just wants my characters to be happy. But we are authors because we make the hard choices for the story even if our characters suffer for it 😢

Especially in a short story you need to budget with what you show, what you tell and what you leave out. Belus side of the story would be interested as a bonus chapter maybe but I agree it was the right choice to leave it out.

Congratulations on a good story. I would like to read all the stories including your longer ones but I simply can't since time is finite 😂

Now the title of the story makes sense. It makes me sad that they were unable to escape their fate or break their blood oaths by sheer will. Narrative wise this ending makes no sense, because this is just what life is like sometimes... But I couldn't help but hope for a happy ending.

OK I suspect that this is a story written by a woman for women. That is fine but it made this chapter a bit cheesy for me. As a man I kept wondering how Belus always seemed to know the right thing to do or to say... I would habe been much more awkward 😶
