This story started out with my thinking about the prompt for a few days wondering what kind of vampire story I could tell that wouldn't be one of the "usual". Then one day I thought what if I try to tell a 'boring' story about a world where the vampires are in charge? I started with the world building, the logistics of feeding on blood in a modern-oh setting and the humans as livestock (but without being too cruel...), living side by side by necessity, the vampires controlling information (no phones, radio or television for the humans)...
Then I wondered what kind go story I could tell in this setting, maybe about a modern kid who feels like the world has become boring. I tried to make it funny or light hearted but that just didn't work. So I added the human girl who breaks the no speaking rule. In my first outline I had them run away together to start a new community where humans and vampires live together. But that felt too clean and I realized even if he tried to find her it would be very hard within the confines of the system. And if vampires live much longer than humans (and he doesn't even know since they are so segregated) the decade and some he takes to find her might be enough for her to build an all new life... And that somehow was the ending I felt worked. Sorry for rambling...
