ykno, one thing I appreciate very much is that while they're latin american (I wonder from where, given the dinner they had >-> maybe it's americanized or something? we have rice and beans often where I live, just without the salad lolol) you avoid that horrible trope where they swap between english and spanish so often
in colloquial speech if you're bilingual you'll probably slip every now and then if you're with otheer bilingual trusted ones, but I keep seeing this portrayed as them randomly swapping for entire sentences at a time, and ever since I saw someone say it makes us seem stupid/uneducated (as in, can't really talk english, ykno...) I've kind of agreed. idk. I acknowledge it's a pet peeve but my God I can't seem to escape it if I'm reading about Hispanic characters UNLESS the author is hispanic too
i see it with other 'foreigner' characters every now and then (especially russian for some reason) but my goodness, it's especially prevalent with those of us on this side of the river
others probably don't mind it as much, it just makes me jitldjnlijlijn
especially cuz forced spanglish is what cringy people do here to humblebrag about knowing english and being more like the muricans because yadda yadda imperialism
