Been a fun read so far, there’s something about this story that keeps me coming back every time a chapter drops.
That said, I have my gripes.
I understand that Katsumi is supposed to be at his lowest point and kind of a prick, but I think my problem comes from the fact that that’s barely changed at all in over 60,000 words. That’s not to say he should have already gone through a whole redemption arc or anything, but for an entire volume with this much story he just feels too static.
There’s nothing wrong with having an unlikable protagonist, in fact it can be a very good starting point for some solid character development, but when it feels like your main character is consistently spitting in the face of any and all development that comes his way it can get a little grating. Sometimes (especially after the assault) it feels like character development is actively chasing him down and he still manages to outrun it.
Still, it’s a good start. Mayumi is an interesting character and much of the secondary cast have their enjoyable traits too. Nara feels like a bit of wasted potential at the moment, but that could easily be rectified by giving her a more active role in volume 2.
I’ll look forward to the continuation. This story has its problems, but it also has potential.
