Thanks for taking the time to both finish the story and give me your thoughts, I sincerely appreciate it.
I sort of went into this aware that my stylistic choices would turn a lot of people away, so I can’t say I’m surprised that it’s your main complaint. A big part of the reason I wanted to write this story in the first place was to play around with non-phonetic spelling and archaic grammar, but reading back through I do think I’ve ended up making a narrative that I’m proud of inaccessible to most people, which I agree is a shame. Maybe in the future I’ll publish a different version where the misspelling is either cut entirely or at least curtailed.
As for Barry’s internal monologue, since it makes up a bulk of the story I tried to strike a bit of a balance with it between being standard enough to be easily readable while also being decidedly British enough to feel like the same character, but there were definitely times when I felt like the difference was jarring too.
This is the first time I’ve written something that deviates so heavily from standard writing practices and conventions, so I fully expected it to be rough around the edges, to say the least, but I hugely appreciate you sticking around to the end
