Honestly, a major aim with writing this was to fix the things I disliked about the genre, and one of my absolute biggest gripes with these high-school drama type stories is the utter refusal to actually fuckin talk things through. Obviously it's not quite that easy, and this single chapter isn't just an outright ending to the problems in their relationship, but when a major issue is miscommunication it always irritates me that they refuse to actually communicate to clear it up.
I think that's a good reading of the core themes of the story, though I'd say there's a little more to it than that. A big part of the messaging for me in this is that isolation and being alone are perfectly okay if they're chosen freely, but chosen isolation and outright rejection of human connection are wildly different things and shouldn't be conflated.
Well, that and a bunch of other stuff about nihilism, anti-conformism and anti-authority but that was more volume one. Volume 2 is definitely focused more on interpersonal relationships and acceptance of other people as you said
