I actually play the Vienna Gambit myself, the intent was less to say the opening is bad and more to show Sai's disdain for gambits and what she considers "cheap tricks."

When I wrote these games, I remember taking positions I had either actually played or constructed and playing the game out from them, but it's been so long since then that I don't remember those positions at all lol. I could have had the full games play out each time but I didn't want to drive away everyone who doesn't have a solid understanding of chess

I will just let you know, despite me referring to this as my "chess story," there's only a handful of games and most of them are not played out fully. This is primarily a character drama with chess theory mostly functioning as a way to expand on the ideals and personalities of the characters without diving too deeply into individual games

Honestly I more or less agree with pretty much every criticism you’ve levelled. I really screwed myself over by not considering the word count early enough, because the story now more or less doesn’t have a middle. All the stuff that’s usually done in the beginning (introducing characters, establishing themes, setting goals) takes up pretty much everything up to Nabiki’s introduction, and then it’s straight to endgame. All the stuff that’s supposed to be the middle of the story (character development, expansion of the world, exploring consequences etc) had to get massively reduced or outright cut to stand a snowball’s chance on hell of finishing in 75k.

Honestly I hugely appreciate the feedback because it mostly confirms what I already thought. If I ever get around to rewriting this, I’ll probably keep the story up to Nabiki’s introduction mostly the same and then add a tonne of extra story before the Opera House rematch. A lot of inter-team relationship building, more screen time for the cats since Time is the only one to ever get limelight, more focus on Toki’s self destructive tendencies and how she overcomes them before facing Aki, all the stuff that *should* have been there in the first place. I’d expect it to be closer to 200k by the end.

So yeah. Thanks for the critique. I think you’re pretty much on the money

Nah, I get it. I think a big problem with this last arc is that, because it’s so condensed from having to fit what should have been a 30k word arc into 20k, the fights get fatiguing because they’re so quick one after another with very little time in between. I imagine it would have been more palatable if they were more spread out. And yeah, I’ll admit, the rhythm is repetitive. I tried to break it up a bit by having different stakes and styles across the fights, but I sort of set myself up for failure with the way I preplanned it all.

As for the eye thing… man, I’m pissed at myself. There was supposed to be a scene way earlier in the story where she uses it as a light source that was supposed to be the set up for this, but I totally forgot that that’s one of the plot lines I cut, so it seems like a complete deus ex machina here. Honestly that one is so egregious I’m gonna have to go back and change it when I have time. This is the problem with planning the ending before writing everything else, that was stupid of me

Alright, name origin time.
Kyouko is a bit of a pun. The word itself can mean strong or solid, but in this case I'm spelling it 狂子, meaning "crazy girl"
Mikai means primitive or savage

The protagonist's name is Yowagi Yuuki. I tried really hard finding a name that could mean "weak" or "cowardly" and settled on using an unusual spelling of yowagi that has 弱 (weakness) in it. Yuuki is spelled with the characters for bravery, because irony
