Really liking Charlotte as a main character. Her internal conflict between practicality as a noble and her sense of ethics over slavery feels very realistic. It’s very easy to find reasons to preserve a status quo even when you know it’s unjust, so a character wrestling with that and still deciding on the better path is satisfying.

Obviously “Samson” is a reference to the biblical figure who slew a thousand men with a donkey’s jaw, but is Aeos also a historical/mythological reference? It’s one I don’t recognise if so

Was the mention of old academic debates a reference to the Socratic dialogues? Both the concept and the name remind me of the academics of Ancient Greece. If so that’s a very interesting reference to make in an Isekai. I like the implication that human societies would likely come up with the same ideas over time, just in different ways.

It’s also eye-opening that in my mind I immediately rejected the idea of transitioning from slavery to indentured servitude, only to realise what a huge step in the right direction it would be from the status quo. It’s easy to take for granted how relatively fair and equal the real world is in comparison to the old, that even mass indenture on a National scale is monumental progress compared to what was.

This story is definitely the most unconventional I’ve read thus far, but I mean that in the highest regard. It’s a refreshingly meaningful and different take on a saturated genre

Don’t wanna spoil too much now, but as a bit of insight into the writing process, I intended for each of the four other heroes to represent a certain archetype of hero in fiction and how they can go wrong. Darcy was the devout type, willing to accept everything she’s told no-questions-asked, but since she was the first one I decided to have Arch challenge her on it early.

Charlie here is the romantic hero type, like you see in a lot of old fairytales. But instead of love as motivation for heroics, he lets it blind him and acts stupid as a result.

I’ve never watched shield hero so I’m unsure if the comparison holds, but it’s not the first time it’s been made

I think the closest thing to a peaceful total abolition of slavery I’ve heard about is that of the British empire, and that still involved supporting slave revolts, patrolling the seas for slave ships and giving a tonne of money to slavers. Neither convenient nor bloodless. Sounds to me like Suzuki’s gonna have to get his hands dirty.
