That's a great point Tomoyuki! ✨ I suppose this was actually reader-facing exposition, but it's true that Souma's knowledge seems inconsistent here. I've patched up that section to make it a little less ham-fisted (though probably the whole book will still need to go past my editor at some point in the future 🤣).
