    Small update:
I made two small revisions in this chapter to keep the story consistent.
    Here are the changes:

    Original – Passage 1:
“That was the day you became a monster!”

    Revised – Passage 1:
“You became a monster that day!” Rei’s voice hardened. “And your experiments on humans? Are those also for ‘survival’?”
His fists clenched, flames crackling more violently around them.
“How many have you already sacrificed?”
    Something broke in his voice.
“How many more lives have you ruined just to satisfy your curiosity?”
The silence that followed was heavy — loaded.
Aoi felt something inside it, an old wound, deeply personal.
Kageyama tilted his head, a slow smile stretching across his lips.
“Ah.” His eyes glimmered with amusement. “You’re still thinking about her. After all this time.”
    He chuckled.
    “Pathetic.”

    Original – Passage 2:
“Let me give you a parting gift,” Kageyama said softly. “Listen closely. I’ve created the perfect conditions. An ōyurei born from millions of obsessions, hatred, and collective despair. It will be born in two weeks.”
    He crossed his arms.
“Nova Entertainment will use it. A yurei king under our control, fueling the entire industry, draining humans of their emotions.” His smile stretched. “We will never starve again. We will be eternal.”
Something felt wrong in those words. Rei sensed it. Kageyama never said “we.” Only “I.”
But before he could dwell on it, Kageyama lifted a hand. Claws of shadow materialized around his fingers.

    Revised – Passage 2:
“Let me give you my farewell gift now. Listen closely,” Kageyama said softly. “I’ve created the perfect conditions. An ōyurei — a yurei king — born from millions of obsessions, hatred, and collective despair.”
He folded his arms, his smile widening.
“In a few days, at the Tokyo Idol Festival, something will be born. Something magnificent. Something terrible.” His eyes gleamed. “And you won’t be able to stop it.”
    He leaned forward slightly.
“Nova Entertainment has perfected an elegant system. Modern idols, social media, collective hatred… everything is connected. And at the center of it all…”
    He paused.
“…I placed my greatest creation. My masterpiece.”
Before Rei could react, Kageyama raised his hand. Shadowed claws materialized around his fingers.

Thanks for reading and following the story!

    Small update:
I revised a short passage in this chapter for consistency.
    Here is the change:

    Original:
“And then there are spirits and ghosts. They’re different. They don’t feed on adoration or fresh emotion.” His voice softened. “They exist as long as someone remembers them. They feed on remembrance. Memory. Almost like your ancestral altars.”
Aoi thought of the photos of her grandparents in her parents’ apartment. Of the incense sticks they lit. Were they there somehow? Sustained by those small acts?
“And you,” she said eventually. “Where do you stand in all of this?”

    Revised:
“And then…” He hesitated, as if brushing against something painful. “There are the Transcended.”
“The Transcended?” Aoi repeated, feeling the weight behind the word.
“Those who chose to transform themselves.” Rei’s tone turned bitter. “To alter their very nature. To become… something else. Not who they were anymore, and not what they hoped to be either. Just… other.”
    His gaze drifted into emptiness.
“No one really knows what they become.” His voice softened, almost sorrowful. “Only that they never come back. Not as they were.”
He tightened his grip around his glass.
“I knew someone who made that choice.” The words were barely a whisper. “I never learned what she became.”
He shook his head as though pushing the memory away and lifted his glass with a sharp gesture.
Aoi let him change the subject.
“And you,” she said at last. “Where do you fit into all of this?”

    Thanks for reading!
