Hi Bubbles, I really appreciate you looking deeper into this story!

To put it simply, I opted for a hard, decisive conclusion (not passing the suffering to others) as it enhanced the feeling of tragedy of this story. Leaving it for the audience to interpret the protagonist’s decision was my initial choice for the ending, too, but I felt that with my writing ability, it would result in less emotional payoff for the audience.

Now, more critically, during my initial research, reading up on a bunch of works on the relationship between Japan and suicide, I also tried to understand the concept of suicide and how it’s viewed through the lens of the Japanese audience. I felt that this ending would resonate with family members of suicide victims the most. There is no good solution for everyone here. And especially for them, there is no “choice”. And I wanted to reflect this in the ending. Personally, leaving the audience to have a larger room for interpretation of the protagonist’s actions felt like a reductive perspective on the effects of suicide on the victim’s family members. The burden, the guilt and the stigma they have to carry—this is also why the protagonist opted not to inform the parents as well. But of course, this is all subjective, and you’re more than welcome to disagree, but I think the end result might be us just agreeing to disagree lol.

So yes, in a literary sense, your point is absolutely valid. I ultimately decided to challenge this norm in exchange for a more relevant social commentary.
